Fred 'A. | Bishop, productions director of the company, spent the entire in voice trials. His records show i something over 2,000 applications; | this means that to select a chorus of { thirty, Mr. Bishop heard over 2,000 men and women sing and as each of these applicants was a professional | it argues well for the truthfulness of the manager's statement that with { Mr. Hopper is the ery best singing chorus assemblefl for light opera. When De Wolf Hopper and the Gil- beft and Sullivan Comic Opera Com- ny appears at the Grand Opera House on Wednesday evening, Dec. | 27th, the opera to be presented is "The Mikado." Morgan Powell said in his criticism in the Montreal Star that the chorus .was well trained, ad- mirably balanced vocally, knew' ev- ery trifling detail of its work well, and both sang and acted with a spirit and an efficacy that went far towards assuring the success of the evening. This chorus was alive all the time and as a result the full concerted numbers were Sung as few people here have 'heard them sung for a quarter of a century. Mystery at Allen's. There's a well developed thread of mystery in "His Wife's Husband," society drama which is being pro- sented at the Allen Theatre today, Friday and Saturday, and in which Betty Blythe is being starred. Mys- tery plays are the most popular stage plays of the day, if the packed houses which long runs on Broaa- way, New York City, are a criterion Morosco's production, "The Bat, has been running for two years; and another mystery play, "The Cat and The Canary," seems likely to remain for indefinite presentation, perhan equalling "The Bat" in popularizy On the screen the mystery thread can be given eveii greater suspens:> than on the stage; by this token while "His Wife's Husband" is society drama essentially, with an Incidental touch of mystery, this touch develops into suspense as keen as that in "The Bat" and adds con- siderably to one's enjoyment of the picture. 'His Wife's Husband" tells the story of a beautiful girl whose first was a marriages of convenience --~to a man who was attracted by nor physical charms and whom she left as dead on the evening of her wed- ding, and whose second marriage was a love match resulting in a sa- preme happiness which was threat ened by the appearance of a man bearing 'a startling resemblance to her first husband. The mystery thread is woven in at this Junecture and keys the picture to a nigh piten of dramatic emotionalism. ---- Takes Up Joy Seriously. Tremblay weighed 138 pound and Haunts 156, an advantage for the local man of 18 pounds, something extraordinary in a wrestling contest. The first fall went to Tremblay in eight minutes, forty-five' secon 1s, then Haunts staged a great rally aad took the second fall after 13 minutes and ten seconds of hard going; in the lzst pertod Tremblay set a terri- fic pace and Haunts {increased his Garrison Indoor Baseball, It has been decided that no mora practices will be held by teams of -ha garrison indoor baseball league it the armoiés until after the New Jear, The teams will get under vay zgain early in January and the schedule for the remaining games vill be decided shortly. © City Hockey League.
