An organization of this kind does a great deal of good in the community. WolYe Islander Alone Remains. All the sieamers, with the excep- tion of the steamer Wolfe Islander, have gone into winter quarters. The steamer St. Lawrence, owned by J. {M. Campbell, has been taken to Col- i1ins Bay and will be placed on the { ways and undergo repairs during the winter months. Good Christmas Cards. Christmas cards made in Toronto are rated by the retall dealers as far ahead of the American brand both in price and in quality. And the Canadian cards invaded the United States with great success until thé Fordney tariff boosted the duty from | atten to forty-five per cent. practiec- ally barring out the Canadian goods. .« Behind In Coal Delivery. Coal dealers are somewhat behina in deliveries, owing to the late as rival of cargoes. It is difficult to ge. a ton of coal delivered within a week. The dealers are selling coal to pur- chasers at their yards at $16 a ton, without delivery. Quite a number of people buy in this way and secure their own carters to make delivery to their cellars. 'Four Live Wires." In the Whig on Wednesday the name of Dr,.C. C. Nash was inad- vertently omitted from the list of || members of the Kingston Rotary olub who ars aso 'city fathers." fii Dr. C. C. TT Awaiting Work To Pact There is no critical change in the! employment situation in the eity. Many men are looking for the work on the new trunk sewer to start. This work is_being held up at pre- sent, pending the receipt of formal permission to carry the sewer under che G.T.R. tracks. There will pro- bably be about twenty-five men em- ployed on this wok at one time. The digging of the drain on Kent street has already been started. A house had been built in the swamp and a heavy copper worm had been used in connection with the etill. The bootlegger was fined $200 for the still and $200 for the offence agaiust the Ontario Tem- perance Act. Raised $900 For The Blind. The coliection carried on througn the Daughters of the Empire for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind was a great success in Kins ston. The collection took place foll- owing the recent adiress of Cap. E. A. Baker, in memoidrl hall. The amount co:.lected through the poxes amounted to $882.14 and following this, amounts were paid in, total- ing $20, making a total of $902.14. The expenses, including 36 cents tax on cheques, amonuted to $2.75. The sum of $900 will'be forwarded to the Institute. The showing is a most creditable one, and those = having charge are to be warmly commended for their work, The Late Willam Dowdall. Scott, train baggageman on the suburban run out of Montreal. Btreet Sign System Needed. A vetw real need for this city, as pointed out by strangers and citizens alike, is a regular sys'em of street signs, placed in conspicuous praces so that all pedestrians and drivers may obtain their location at a glance. There is hardly a persou in the city who, at some time or other, has nov searched, many times vainly, for a mark of any kind that would indic- ale a certain street. At the present time, many corners have no mara- ings at all, while others are marx- ed on adjacent houses or on the sidewalks, the latter, naturally, of no use whatever in the winter. It would be very desirable if the city council should adopt some uniform and legible sys'em as soon as poss- ible, and a blue background with white lettering has been suggested by a prominent citizen. This im- provement would be welcomed as a real asset to the city. CHRISTMAS FURS at Gourdier's ne A -------- U.F.0. social evening in aid of fire relief fund, Cata¥aqui Hall, Fri- day evening.
