THE DAILY BRITISH WHIG CRAPS TO CRICKET _ SPORTING T0 RUMMY RUGBY WEDNESDAY, FEERUARY 21, 1088 -- BADMINIO v 70 | BOXING | USSARS AGAIN DEFEAT "FRONTENAC REGMEN Both Teams Now Tied for @roup Honors and Will Enter Semi-Finals. ~ The Frontenacs went down to de- feat at the hands of the 4th Hussars on Tuesday night in one of the most . keealy-contestod indoor * baseball games witnessed in the Armouries this season, the losers ' taking the count by 11 to 9. The win for the Hussars places them in a tie for first Place in Group "B" and assures them of entry In the semi-finals, . The 4th Hussars had a stiff task to accompMsh last night and they went into the fray with grim deter- mination written all over their faces. They finished the job op hand in first-class style and all credit is due to them for a hard-earned victory. " The game attracted the record crowd of the seasém and prominent among the spectators were a number of the players and members of the Hedvy Battery, who were naturally boping that the Hussars would go under; a loss for the latter giving the Heavies another go at the cham- plonship. However, the cavalrymen were out to win from the etart of the game, and apparently they will be heard from again before the finals are completed, / 'The Frontenacs were equally de- termined 'and it surely would have been great fun for them to have been able to watch the Hedvies and the Hussars fight it out for second place. Porhaps they were a mite too confident of this pleasure, * There is very little to comment on concerning the game. Both teams 7, played exceptionally good ball, the Hussars having seven errors chalk- od up against them and the Fronte- * nace five, The winners knocked out 14 clean hits, while the losers ob- tafned 11. Sands struck out three Hussars, while he was the lone vic- tim by this route at the hands of ~ Gourdier. The rest of the play may be fairly well judged from the score by Innings. ' The contest was staged 'In slightly over sixty minutes. McCullough stood out for the los- ers and his work in right fleld was brillant, i not sensational. Sands twirled a food game but his main strength appeared to b2 in the A-) _ Support given him by his mates. On the play the Frontenac: havo noth- is bo be arhamed of and their good last night would have certa'nly d them a victory if the/Hussars not Ween right on their toes. 6 fatter team played their second " of the season last night, other contest that passed showing being the battle with Headquurters earlier in the On that occasion only one )' yas recorded against them. ler pitched the beast game of short caveer in the box thus }v- up to his reputation of improve- with every contest. © Of the players nothing need be said that.they were out to play and they innings: ; enaos ........080411000-- 9 Hussars .......20104202x--11 teams: . i Hussare--Teepell, ss; Arnedll, Bhangrok, 1b; Gourdier, p; Craw- , of and rf; Watts, rf and 2b; 'In the otter game scheduled for Tuesday night, "B" 'Battery won from Ordnance by default, ss isis. It's not known whether Queen's will play 'Varsity or MoGiH in the cpening game. The result of Queen's objeclion was that the schedule will be arranged on Thursday morning in Montrea! when all the captains and managers are present. John McKelvey will be -out with Frontenacs and there is also talk of the appearance of the two Carr-Har- ris brothers, of R.M.C. fame, -with the city squad. Another attraction ie promised by the addition of Harry 3atstone and David Harding to the Queen's out- fit, in addition to the regular senior team, Harding has played one game here but Batstone has yet to be seen on the ice as a player. It will look Hke a convention of star rugby players when McKelvey, 'Conacher, Quinn, Reynolds, Bond, Batstone, Harding, Panet and other notable gridiron stars take the ice. Frontenacs have heen practising faithfully for the event, which will be played 'for the championship of the city.
