THE DAILY BRITISH WHIG AMUSEMENTS What the Press Agents Say About Coming Attractions THREE SOLDIERS FIGURE IN THRILLING ADVENTURE They were "soldiers three" -- a British "Tommy", a French pollu and a Belgian corporal. The is- |. tice had been signed™and had just obtained their release from tae military encampment. As they walked triumphantly, arm in arm, out of the stockade gates to free- dom, they were happy. Gone were war's dangers; now to "2njoy once more a life a peace, They walked down the road, en their way to--well, they didn't care whither they were bound for the moment as long as the trail led to an inn where they could drink to thelr friendship in vin rouge. Then for home. This was the starting point of an adventure such as none of the trio had ever dreamed of. They found themselves enmeshed in a plot by which a group of intriguing poli- ticlans were attempting to seize the throne of Moravia. The dangers that confronted them during the |. next few days made war's perils re- semble a child's game In compari- scn, And before the French soldier had recovered from the daze into which he had been precipitated by the kaleidoscope of events, he found bimself married to a countess and on the thtone. ee N This is a portion of the fascinit- ing story of "Refuge," a First Na- tional attraction staring Katherine McDonald, at the Allen Theatre today, STOCK MARKETS (Reported by Johnston & Ward, $6 Princess street, Members of the Montreal and Toronto Stock Ex- changes). The Dinghy Regatta. An InterCity dinghy regatta is to be held on Saturday, Aug. 18th over the Kingston Yac Club course. It is the third of the series for the championship cup; Kingston stands a .good chance for present standing. The clubs contending are the Kingston Yacht club, The Royal St. Lawrence club, the Royal Canadian club, Toronto. Montreal, and D. M. Jemmett and crew and ston club in an open series, Dr. 'Bruce Hopkins and H. Hora repres- enting the latter club. There will be three races in each class the crews changing boats at | the conclusion of each race. | Arrangements are being made | a dance being given in the evening to which members of the club and out-of-town visitors only are lavit-] ed. : | THE PETERBORO SQUAD | SNATCH OPENING GAME | fThe Grand Trunks Defeated On Their Home Lot 3 to 2. 'The Belleville Grand Trunks were forced to bow to Peterboro by 3 to 2, In the first of the home and home games of the "B" division play-Sifs, for the Central Oatario Baseball League championship, in the form. er town, on Wednesday afternoon. The visitors scored their entire three runs In the opening frame, | when '"Peenfe" Mills, in left field, | allowed a long drive to go past him, | and then stood by and watched the | centre fielder chase after the roll- | ing ball. That started the Mreworks ' and before the home squad could | collect themselves, the Solomonites | had forced two more runs across the plate. 'Williams, the Indian ace, held the slugging Peterboro gang in the hol- low of his hand for the remainder of the game, and had the best of the argument over Heckman, who | was on the mound for the visitors. Belleville scored two runs in their half of the sixth innings, but failed | to rally enough to tie up the count: | or forge in front, The game was a | pitchers' duel throughout, and was extremely spectacular from the; spectators' point of view. Belleville will now have to defeat Peterboro on their home lot, and win the final contest on neutral] ground, which is a real handicap to | overcome. It would appear as If the bad break in the opening inn- ings on Wednesday afternoon, snatched the championship from the clever railway team. If the series should require a third game, the Kingston fans may see the final contest at the Fair 'Grounds, although Cobourg will also 'bid for the decisive game. Polo On Wednesday.
