Cornwall, Oct. 1. -- Members of the Ontario Provincial Police .who have been here since the raid on the "beer garden" a week ago are en- riching the coffers of the govern- ment by their activities. The offi- cers appear to be keeping their eyes peeled on the provincial highway leading from the Quebec boundary. The first haul was a coupe, in which the officers secured 179 bottles of champagne, rye, etc. Louis Faig- pant, of Corona, Long Island, N. Y., one of the occupants, claimed own- ership of the car and contents. - He was brought before Police Magis- strate Cline, and was fined $1,000 and costs or six months. His associate, a man named Ro- bido, of Watertown, N.Y., was fined $800 and cests, and was ordered to gerve four months on account of evading the serving of a summons on Jan. 27th on a charge of having liquor in an illegal place, and an ex- tra six months if the fine was not paid. The car was registered as a touring car when it came into Cana- do, and on account of it being used for commercial purposes afterward it was seized by the Canadian Cus- toms. Officers Connor, Webb, Carroll, Wetherall and Seguin figured in the second haul, when a limousine with false bottom was captured near Lan- caster. Three Toronto men were in the car, and gave the names of L'Heureux, Cohen and Downs. The car contained 274 bottles of Scotch and 24 of gin. The first named as- sumed all responsibility, and was fined $500 and costs or six months. Haul No. 3 was engineered by of- ficers Wetherall, Carroll, Webb, Martin and Seguin, who were ac- companied by C. A. Jordan of Ot- tawa, Inspector for No. 6 District, who was in charge at the "beer gar- den" raid. This was the largest hau] of the three, consisting of 420 bottles of whiskey and rum secreted in a touring car. The occupants gave the names of Felix Desjarlais and Eugene Dufour of Windsor, and the arrests were again made noar Lancaster. Mr. Cline ordered each to pay a fine of $800 or serve six months. The money was put up. In the three hauls no fewer than 897 bottlgs wore secured, and the fines totalled, $3,900.
