It is too bad the Romans spent £0 much of their time and energy making war and getting ready for war, A great deal of cleverness was stored in the heads of the lead- ers. This cleverness might have been used to do something worth while. Instead it was used to ngure vut better ways of killing. Yesterday I told you about the clever battering ram idea. Today, we have a picture which i]lustrates another idea Groups of soldiers could not be hurt when they cam to attack a city, om In each group there were dozen men. You can count their snlelds in the picture, which shows an at- tack on a certain town. The defenders are hurling all protected by "roofs of shields." fixed their shields together so they. This old Roman picture shows sol diers attacking a city, Eo sorts of things aginst the Romans. | If you look closely, you can see «on; top of the shields two wheels, two | torches and a short sword, You | may also notice a pot from which ! boiling oil appears to be flowing Ali these things fail to hurt the soldiers, who are protected by the snrera "roofs." To the right and left are Roman cavalrymen. It is hard to see why they are galloping toward the wal} in such an open way. Perhaps it is because this wall is lower than usual, and they hope to kill the de- fenders with their long spears be- fore harm comes to themsetves, At the lower left, you can see two men with torches. They want to set fire to the walls, which in this case were largely made of woven twigs. Next--Pirates in Roman Days, They are NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION MEETING (Continued from page 2.) London, Oct, 10.--(By Mail).-- Curious what a difference there is at this season between the foliage of London and the surrounding coun- try. Although at the moment a won- derful spell of hot Indian summer has descended on London, causing a sudden relapse into the lightest cloth- ing and gay apparel, our town trees end fields are deep in autumn color- ing. Upon London's gardens and parks there is now cast that wistful sadness that marks the death of real summer, and of which Tennyson wrote so magically. The whole in- nuendo is that of "the autumn fields and days that are no more." Yey out in the Surrey lanes autumn's hand seems to have made so far hardly an impression. - The woods are as green as they 'were in June almost, and the flelds as freshly painted. Does Nature herself grow old more quick- ly in the great town? Long after winter reigns supreme in London, as old walkers and young motorists know well, summer lingers with her fingers to her lips thirty miles out. Fire Makes Girl Rich Heiress. Miss An- drew's mother sustained serious in- juries when she leaped from the third floor of the burning dwelling. The estate is estimated at not less than $100,000. Canada's Arsenic Output.
