The leader of the first white set- [ covered America about the year 1000. les was named Leif. He was the son of "Eric the Red." Often he is called "Leif Erickson." Leif lved about five hundred years before Columbus. Like many other Northmen, he was a bold sea rover His father had spent much of his life in Iceland and Greenland. Before Leif sailed toward Ameri- ica, other Norse sailors had come | pretty close to the shore, but Leif's party seems to have been the first { to make a landing | Here is part of an old account of this trip: "Leif went on board the ship with 35 comrades. They made the ves- sel ready and went out to sea. The first land they sighted had glaciers on it. They went ashore, but could find no grass. The land between the sea and the glaciers was like a field of ice. "Then they went back on board and sailed out to sea and found another land. This account goes on to say that grapes were discovered not far from where' the Northmen were staying, There were so many grapes, in fact, that they gave the place the name of | "Vinland," meaning 'land of the vine." Three other trips to America are said to have been made by Northmen Erie. RECEPTION AT "TE WHARE."
