AUCTION BRIDGE ANALYZED BY WYNNE FERGUSON. Author of the Authprative Book: "Auction Bridge for 1924." > INTRICACIES OF INFORMATORY DOUBLE EXPLAINED--FOUR DIS- TINCT TYPES OF HANDS TO BE BID BY DEALER PARTNER OVER INFORMATORY DOUBLE, SAYS EXPERT. ~ The informatory double has probably done more to arouse Interest in auction than any other' innovation since the inception of the game. It opens up an entirely mew field of bidding and in doing so, presents some interesting and puzzling questions of bidding. For example, sup- pose the dealer bids one no-trunmip and second hand doubles (informatory), with what type of hand should the dealer's partner make a bid ? 'There is still considerable difference of opinion ong the expents as to the proper procedure in this situation, but the i has very definite ideas in regard to it. There are four distinct types of hands which should be bid by the d&aler's partner over an informatory double of one no-trump. First: With a hand as good as an original no-trump, dealer's partner should double. For example, with a hand of this type: h--A 4 2 --K 7 4 d--J 10 3 2 s--K 10 9 The redouble is a powerful weapon when properly used and the source of many big penalties.. After a redouble, partner should double any bid made and try for penalties. Second: If the dealer's partner holds as good as an original bid in a suit, he should bid two in the suit over the double. For example, with a hand of this type, bid two clubs: without showing a distinct change of appearance. It pays to buy a shade of good lin- en rather than a cheap, starched, cotton one. A "Holland" shade means | & linen shade which can be sponged off with soapy water and wiped dry. But the cheaper filled or starched shades will crack and, if sponged, must be handled most carefully, To sponge a good Holland shada, soap) with a sponge, taking care that the sponge is wrung almost dry Spread the shade on a table to do the work, and wipe with a clean, moistened cloth, then with a dry cloth, cleansing only a small area at a time, : The best way to clean the cheaper quality of shade is the following: Lay the shade on a table and rub lightly with 'a little cheesecloth bag filled with heated cornmeal. Finish by dusting with a soft-bristled brush. This method may also be used on the better quality of shade if desired. Still other ways of renovating Holland shades are these: Rub shad- es lightly with powdered bath brick applied with a slightly-moisten 31 pad of soft cloth. Dust with a soft brush. Or, begin by wiping the shade all over with a white-cheesecloth duster, then go over it again with a sponge moistened. with turpentine. Shades that are too old to be washed can often be painted with a good quality of house paint. But take care to apply this paint in a h--10 4 c--A K d--10 7 --9 2 By so doing, you give the exatt information to your partner that you have as good as an original bid in that suit. It is the only way you can give this exact information and for that reason the opportunity should not be lost. Third: If the dealer's partner holds a set up minor suit, he should bid two no-trump over the double. For example, with a hand of this type, bid two no-trump: 2 4 2 3 % h---7862 c--10 4 3 d---AKQIJ1 e--J 4 Here again you have the, opporunity to give this exact information to partner and you can do so by bidding the two no-trump. Fourth: If the dealer's partner holds a hand which justifies a major suit take out the mo-trump irrespective of the double, it should also be bid over the double. For example, with this type of hand, bid two spades: h--10 7 c--J 9 4 a--Q 6 e--J 107642 When you hold six or more hearts or spades it is obligatory for you to bid that suit over partner's notrump and the obligation is just as strong when the no-trump has been doubled. Such a hid gives partner exact information that you have a justifiable takeout and that information may be very valuable. Y SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PARTNER ouUT. Problem ¥ A 38 Zz -- , h--Q J 98765 o--10 9 a---9 2 --T 6 4 No score, rubber game. Z dealt and bid one no-trump and A doubled. What should Y now bid ? 'In case Y passed, B passed and Z bid two spades, which A doubled. What should Y now bid ? From the foregoing discussion it should be obvious that Y should have bid two hearts over the double, He has six hearts and, therefore, an obligatory take out of the no- trump. After making the mistake of passing, however, the right thing for him to do is not so obvious. When B also passed the double, it was evident that he did so because he was certain of defeating Z's one no-trump bid. - In other words, both A and B have indicated strong hands. 2's sub- sequent bid of two spades merely indicated that he realized his no-trump bid would probably be defeated and that he figured a better chance to get out of trouble by bidding spades. A's double of two spades Indicated that he could defeat that bid, so that Y was confronted with a difficult problem. The fact that he had thre spades was an argument nst bidding three hearts, but his outside hand was so weak that there was little or no chance for Z to make two spades. . On the other hand, he had a strong heart suit and if his partner had thin layer and to dry it thoroughly before putting the shade up. I must warn my readers that col- ored shades.are more difficult" to cleanse than white ones. Washing may streak or fade them. Sometimes the heated-cornmeal method is the only one safe to use--but you should experiment even with this, on an in- conspicuous part of the shade, before going ahead with the entire shade. It is always safe to make tests, in work of this 'sort, before boldly at- tempting to cleanse the whole arti- cle. -- All inquiries addressed to Miss Kirkman in care of the "Efficieat Housekeeping" department will he answered in these columns in_thair turn.
