Yarker and Vero day, | wife LETTERS To The Editor Returned Men Overlooked: Kingston, May 21--(To the Editor): The unveiling of the cenotaph in Mac- donald park last week has provoked considerable discussion among the re- turned soldiers of the city as to the Purpose such nfonuments really serve | and the wisdom of spending painfully | gathered money upon them. Honor ol the worthy dead is a highly laudable | sentiment, but when it is joined to a | disregard for the deserving living it is not so praise-worthy. Kingston has al- | ready laid itself open to the charge of | not caring a hoot for its returned ve- | terans and no amount of money spent on those who did not return can assu- age the bitterness of spirit engendered by the neglect of those who made sac- rifices in serving and were unfortunate enough to have survived them. It is'a significant fact that no repre- sentative of a veterans' organization in Kingston was invited to be present at the unveiling of the cenotaph. Honor to the dead or regard for the surviv- (~~. ing is a consideration secondary to the / social advertising accruing to the pro- motors of such undertakings. It is on a par with our Memorial Hall, which is a memorial to one man in particular, nd in general to those who gave the Ps and whose names are inscrib- ed in letters thrice the size of those which record the names of the men who gave their lives. Kingston has for- gotten her citizen soldiers and the pro- mises so lavishly made when they went away. While there exists a single case of deserving need among the men who served or their families, providing the means of relieving it should be a first charge upon our philanthropy, But what has been our record? For any civic appointment it is a detriment to have served overseas, If we need a janitor, a one-armed veteran has no chance against an able-bodied slacker. Kingston is unique among the cities of Canada in being the only one that has not. provided her returned men with a club house, or given assistance to them in their efforts to relieve the necessi- ties of their unfortunate comrades. Kingston is the only city in Canada whose council has compelled her ve- terans to appear before them and plead for the privilege of observing Poppy Day. We recall some of thé speeches delivered and the promises made as the boys marched away and the disil- lusionment has been painful. Those who had the white meat during the war get all the gravy now, but we erect ce- notaphs to the dead--to the dead who turn over in their graves and say, "If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies blow In Flanders Field." --D. A. VOLUME. President Ontario Provincial Com- mand, G, W. V, A, A GANANOQUE "SHOWER." For Miss Maynie Breanan Who Is To Be Married. Gananoque, May 21.--In the mar- riage of Miss Maynie Brennan, which will take place next month, not only will the company which she serves lose one of its most valued employees, but she will be a distinct loss to the whole community generally. In her ca- pacity as local manager of thexBell Telephone Company she has at. all times been found most courteous and obliging; apart from this Miss Bren. nan has ever been willing to lend a helping hand towards all worthy ob- jects. In war time she was one of the best Red Cross workers--in fact there is no church or organization in town or vicinity with which she has not been conspicuously associated in their en- tertainments, tag days, etc. It has therefore been suggested by several citizens that before leaving us to take up her residence in Montreal some evi- dence should be given of the people's appreciation, It has been decided that * perhaps the best way to do this so as to embrace all Miss Brennan's friends n town and vicinity would be to give \ hér a miscellaneous shower in the Ly- next Monday evening, May 26th, It would be practically impossible to issue. a: formal invitation to all the friends who would be glad to do Miss Brennan honour on this occasion, so all seeing this will kindly accept it as an invitation to be present, and pass it along to other mutual friends.
