Mix butter and sugar | together, then add the salt, nutmeg, vanilla, and melted chocolate (cooled). Also add the milk and the flour sifted with the baking powder, Mix well and | roll out on a slightly-floured bread board, about one-fourth inch thick. Cut with a doughnut cutter and fry to a light brown in deep fat which is hot | enough to brown a small piece of | bread in 60 seconds. Drain well and | sprinkle with powdered sugar. "Or, better yet, sugar the doughnuts as follows: Put six doughnuts into a! large paper bag with a couple of table- spoons of powdered sugar; close top of +bag and then shake well. When the doughnuts are well coated with the su. gar, remove them and put six more into the bag, shaking as before and ad- ding more powdered sugar as neces- sary. Save left-over sugar for next bak- ing. This method will save lots of trou- bla and leaves no sugar-dust to €lean up afterwards." LOCKETT'S was a splendid one and all the knit- ted garments represented hours of | work by the members, Miss Hague, | a former Kingston girl, who spoke | on the occasion of its packing on | Wednesday evening, was delighted | with the articles to be sent to the far | east, | That the following clipping from the Toronto Star will be of special | interest ; to Kingstonians just now: "Only once has a 'Mac' been Presi- dent of the United States. For the | first' time a 'Mac' appears in the list | of British Premiers. Canada has | had two and Ontario one. And the Macs are the salt of the earth and no mistake. When a man is called Mac, be it in relation to his first or his last name, or only a nickname, there is a man you can tie to 99 times out of 100: Hyrrah for the Macs!" -- That if one is to judge by the fn scription of the dresses sent in to the Whig, the RM.C. ball will be a splendid sight. Crystal, pearl and sequins will make a riot of color which will be set off by the black gowns which are numerous and the simple crepe and taffeta frocks which seem to be much worn by the young girls this year. That the ready-to-wear shops and the drygoods are finding the effect of | a few warmer days cheering. Wo- men are realizing that we always need summer frocks in Ontario, even if the season for them will be rather short as this year. Education has for its object the for- mation of character.
