All of which is why Ena Doris Welsh, 17, and Cynthia Stevens, 186, gave themselves, the police, a taxi driver and this staid, sleepy, old Sus- Sex cathedral town the sensation ot the year. You wouldn't expect these mere kids to stir this burg out of its dull English routine, but it was precise- ly that dullness which moved them to action. . Ena jis employed as a domestic servant and Cynthia is apprenticed to a seamstress. Fired Ly the movies, they decided to drop the mop and the needle. So they called on Tom Ferry, a neighborhood shoe- maker. Ferry was a brave soldier during the war and saw service in France. On the. battlefield near Menin he picked up a German re- volver. The girls knew he kept the revolver in his desk. While Cynthia ta'ked to him, Ena cabbaged the gun. Thus armed and with about two dollars between them they set out for London and Life with a capital "L." directed the man to drive them to Patcham. And suddenly it dawned on them, as they saw the taximeter busily working, that they didn't have enough to pay their fare. And just about that time the driv- er asked what address in Patcham they wanted. "I'll sit up beside you and show you," said Ena Welsh promptly, After she clambered beside him, she ordered him to drive them t London. { "But that. will cost you £6 and you don't look as if you had tha. much and---"" He didn't finish his sentence for he found himself looking into the business end of that German re- volver, 'Oh, all right, miss, it's London for you," said he. In the magistrates' court, the po- lice said the girls were given good characters by all who knew them. "We did it from a sense of adven- ture," said Ena Welsh. "And we are very sorry now," said Cynthia Stevens. "Even- so, it would have been all right if the taxi hadn't run into that lamp post," said Ena. The magistrates remanded the girls in custody while they thought over their case and decided what to do with them. ' LOCAL NEWS TEAS Brief Items of Interest Picked Up by the Whig Re- . porters.
