Noonan, an efficent and popular officer in the customs and excise department in Perth for the long term of twenty-four years, has resigned that position to accept the district agency of the Canada Life Insurance Co., with headquarters in Perth. * Fort Wellington Repairs. At Prescott, Fort Wellington of historic fame, which is now under the supervision of the Department of the Interior, is undergoing exten- sive repairs. W. G. Webb, who ser- ved overseas, has been appointed supervisor, and is thoroughly con- versant with the history of the place which is becoming the Mecca for tourists. To Repair Bridge Warden Fowlds and the members of the Counties Road Commission for Northumberland and Durham have let a contract for the repairing of the bridge at Campbeliford, to the Ontario Bridge company, for $9,- 212. Work is expected to start Aug. 15th. The government, it is un- derstood, will pay two-fitths of the ll | cost, the united counties are to pay three-fourths of the remainder and il the Town of Campbeliford, one- fourth, A A a Sami, Clayton Ferry Breaks Record. The steamers Mississquoi and Yen- || nek of the Thousand Island Naviga- tion Company, which plies between Clayton and Gananoque, broke all records for a single day last week between these two points. On their return they will reside at Marmora. About Outside Contractors. A resident writes the Whig com- plaining about the number of bufld- ing contracts awarded in Kingston to outside firms by Queen's Univer- sity, the General Hospital and vari- ous citizens who are constructing residences. Enquiry shows that local contractors were given the same chance of bidding as the outsiders, but the figures of tht latter were the lowest. It is pointed out that a Kingston contractor is building the new arena at Queen's. Ng Cheese Sold. No cheese were sold at the Fron- tenac Cheese Board on Thursday at the price offered, 16 11-16th cents. The cheesemen considered it a big drop from last week's Tecord of 17 1-16th cents. Bidding started at 16 cents. The last bid was made by Mr. ilton. The following cheese, all olored, were boarded: Glenburnie, 60; Howe Island, 40; Model, 60; Silver Springs, 62; Thousand Islands, 26; Wolfe Island, 532. School Plan Impractical. Addressing the Renfrew Rotary Club, Dr. G. G. McNab, inspector of public schools for South Renfrew, said he did not think consolidated schools would settle the rural school problems of the Ottawa Valley and Eastern Ontario. He holds that the winters are too cold and stormy to admit of a proper transportation of children in vans to schools.
