The Testimony of Salvation Army Adjutant, "In my experience there is con- siderably less drunikenness through- out the province of Quebec than in Ontario, despite the fact that liquor may be purchased here openly--I have found it much easier to handle the men of Quebec than any other city in Canada in which I have been located. One of the worst forms of degradation with which we have to contend is attributed to drunken- ness, but I wish to say most empha- tically that I saw more drunkenness and other forms of vice in Ontario than I have met with in Quebec." Such is the testimony of Adjutant Harding of the Salvation Army, Montreal, as given in the Montreal Gazette of May 15th.--Advt, Canada Steamships Issues Show Gains Canada Steamships issues proved the centre of most of the interest on Toronto 'Change, especially the pre- ferred. Lake Writes. Kingston, Oct. 21:--(To the 'Edl- tor): With your permission; I would like to say to the Whig's readers that in my opinion government con- trol of:the liquor trafic simply means that all who. can pay for it can Bot all they want under that regime. May we not expect to see men under its influence, staggering on the streets as in the days of yore? Parties run down by intoxicated drivers of motor cars will be of com- mon occurrence. I well remember the time when there were six taverns, as they were then called, between Batterses and Kingston, a distance of only sixteen miles, and mdny farmers would come to the market, dispose of their load, and on their way home spend what their wives and children were badly in need of. Now there is none, and the farmer comes to the market, disposes of his load, deposits the proceeds in the bank, or takes home with him the luxuries his wife has orderpd, Then, she would often reach his home dur- ing the small hours in the morning, so intoxicated that his wife, who had been anxiously waiting, was <ompel- led to help him into the house, and take care of the team in a cold win- ter night. Now supper is ready, and the wife and children are waiting to welcome father home, Then, those having bank accounts were the ex- ception." Now they are legions. What has - brought about this great change? Surely not the liquor trafic, that is debasing, and tends to poverty and distress. Is it not due to the persevering efforts of those who would save that father from a drunkard's grave, and remove the accursed thing from the reach of the children and those that follow.. I fee] confident, Mr. Editor, that if those who will vote on the twenty- third, could look back and compare the past with the present prosperous condition of the province, they would hesitate before marking their ballots in favor of government control. There is no one thing Satan is do- ing more with to thwart the purpose of God, and drag men down to perdi- tion, than the liquor trafic. Shall we relax our efforts, and give him a free hand, by voting for government control. I fanéy I hear those who are conscientious, and care for the prosperity of the province and the souls of their fellow men, saying, No, No, No, we will hold on to what we have and hope for the future. It is quite evident to the observer that those in favor of the traffic have in the past, and are now, making a des- perate effort to bring the O.T.A. into disrepute, and make as many as possible believe that it is a failure. Do not be deceived by their enticing words. Let the answer echo back, "No Surrender." No government should have control of such a wea- / ~-DR.
