Kennedy Remem- bered by Staff at Ports- mouth Penitentiary. y ene Mr. Michadl J. Kennedy, the vet- eran messenger at Portsmouth peni- tentiary, who vecently retired, was given a very pleasant surprise late on Thursday afternoom, when he was called to the north gate of the institution, and there he was made the recipient of a handsome chair, along with a pipe and pouch, from the members of the prison staff. The gifts were accompanied by an ad- dress which referred to the cordial relations existing between Mr. Ken- ' nedy and every member of the staff and also to his splendid service of over fifty-two years at the institu- tion. Warden J. C. Poasford gave an address, in which he took occasion to refer to the long and useful ser- MICHARL J. KENNEDY vice rendered by Mr. Kennedy. The latter, he said, had carried out his duties faithfully and well, and wag retiring with the best wishes of the entire staff. Mr. P. M. Beaupre read the ad- dress and Mr. James Tweddell made the presentation. The Address Presented. The address, which was signed by Warden J. C. Pounsford and P. M. Beaupre, instructor, on behalf of the staff reads as follows: "Dear Mr. Kennedy: The under: signed, your associates on the staff take this opportunity, at the time you are completing your fifty-second year of conti service, of expressing in a tangible form their high regard for you. "Some of us on the staff have been associated with you through almost your entire tenure of' office; others have experienced the pleasure of your affable and loyal attachment to this institution for only a short time, and the association has been by your genial all circumstances "In presenting to you these slight you will accept them in the spirit in which they are tendered to you, and value they may possess. "Our cordial wishes are that, on your retirement, you and yours will health and happiness."
