In order to help out the unemploy- ment situation this winter, the city council on Monddy night, on motion of Ald. Peters and O'Connor, decided to také up excavation work for sewers on Division, Alfred and Concession streets, for.a total of about 1,800 feet, according to the recommendation of the city engineer. A by-law will be prepared for the work. It will Bé recalled that Mayor An- grove took up 'the question of provid- ing for men out of work this winter a few days ago, and proposed that a cer- tain line of 'work be undertaken. Ald. Peters, chairman of the board of works, stated that he had taken up the matter with the city engineer. Ev- ery part of the city was gone over, and the work decided on consisted of a sewer on Division. street, Concession and Alfred streets. pd frets pointed-out. that the question of employment for men in the winter was a very important, and he asked the members of the council to give the matter their serious considera- tion. "1 have a half dozen to a dozen men calling on: me €very day for assist ance," added the Mayor. "I think we should take on all this work. If the government agrees to 3 one- alf of the cost," it will wakp it easier for the city, and" T believe the government is considering a plan to do this, but in the meantime, I think that we should get fometHing for the men to do. We want to keep' away from giving out doles." & ; = On motion of Ald. Chown, the utili- ties commission will be asked to pro- vide a light at the corner of Macdon- ell and Scott street, and will purchase a self measuring gasoline tank for the upper fire station at a cost of $100. Council approved of plans prepared for Smith street, as submitted by the engineer. Plans made some time ago have disappeared and so new plans had to be secured, showing the var- ious lines. -- Reports of Committees. The following report of the board of works was adopted: "Phat whereas Stanley Campbell has been paying local improvement tax on Durham street and Park street ou the one lot, and the sewer on Durham street t anbtbe used to drain said lot, that he be refunded the amount he has paid for the Durham street sewer, and have it applied on payment for the Park street sewer. an s "That the following applications for installing @asoline pumps be granted, focation and work to be under the sup. crvision of the City Engineer: 'Cooke's Autos * Serv ot. in front of their garage. * Universal Tire and Batt on the curb, 264 Ontario street. : "George Little, rles street, mid- way between Bago and .
