KNIGHT == = rT AE AND and Bat SECOND PRESENTATION OF "THE MIKADO" There Was a Capacity House at the Grand on Tuesday . Night. The Grand Opera House had ca- pacity occupation last night for the second presentation of "The . Mi- _kado" under the auspices of the Kingston Kiwanis Club and none went away disappointed. it was not perfect but it is the best presentation of this famous Gilbert and Sullivan piece which has even been done here outside the In- comparable production of De Wolfe Hopper. Some of the major' parts | Jacked the finish of professionals-- | the timing was a little too fast in places--~but the enthusiasm put lo- to the minor parts more than count- erbalanced this, and the experienc- ed Charles Gates, as Ko-Ko, wisely concentrated on clearness of enun- ciation to put over his part and did it to perfection, The side-boxes were bedecked in the beloved red, yellow and blue of Queen's and the leading ladies of the company carried Queen's ribbons in the different scenes. Coach W. P. Hughes and Mrs. Hughes, Assistant Coach Badgeley and mémbers of the Queen's senior and intermediate teams occupied the lower boxes. There was not a hitch, and the only accident was one which helped to put the show over when the tall and hansome Namnkipoo, played by Harold Singleton, demonstrated the Occidental method in handling his Oriental swedthéart, Yum-Yum, played by Miss Marion Bruton, and the dainty little slipper went clat- tering to the floor while the young lady was being kissed in midair. Both players showed the poise of professionals and continued their song with a smile amid the applause and laughter of the audience. A. J. Woodthorpe made an ad- mirable Pooh-bah. His acting stood out and his tall erect figure lent the proper setting necessary for all those great state officers which he exercised 'for a consideration.' ROBBED AND BEATEN BY ARMED THUGS Dr. Arthur Lipman Was the Victim of a Hold=up In Toronto. Dr. Arthur Lipman, a druggist of Bay an rrard street, Toronto, and a son of 'Mr. B. Lipman, Brock street, was attacked, robbed and beaten by three armed thugs on Saturday night stole $272 in bills from Dr. Lip- man's pocket, and made their escape without detection. Dr, Lipman, though, with his hands and feet tied by light telephone wire, managed to make his way to the street and called for help. The three men entered the store while Dr. Lipman was alone and preparing to close the store. As he stepped to the counter, one of the men put a revolver to his chest, while another struck him over the head. He was then bound with the wire, and a diamond pin and Masonic ring and the money stolen. On raising his head, Dr. Lipman was kicked by one of the thugs. After working his feet out of the wire, Dr. Lipman got to the street, notified WHilam Edwards, 345 Vie- toria street, who was passing, and Constable Crowley 'was called. A good description of the hold-up men was given to the police. *. Mr. Barnet Lipman received a telegram from Toronto on Wednes- day morning which stated that his son's condition was somewhat im- proved. Mr. Davis said this was due to the destruction of deer by wolves, and the driving of them to the settle- ments. The wolves are increasing very rapidly.
