The time for the | filing of qualification papers expired at 9 o'clock on Tuesday night, and there was the usual stir arpund the office of the city clerk, Dr. W. W, Sands. 3 There will be a contest for the mayor's chair between Thomas B. Angrove and Dr. C. C. Nash, and also one for the two vacancies on the public utilities commission, The candidates for the commis- sion are J. M. Campbell and H. C Nickle and R. N. F. Macrarlane. James Halliday, the veteran reeve kof Portsmouth, was nominated as a commissioner, but he dropped out of the running. There will be a great race for al- dermanic honors. There were ac- clamations in two of the wards -- Ontario and Sydenham, but in the other five wards there promises to be a battle royal. There has been a good deal of talk about thera be- ing no interest fn municipal affairs, but the crop of candidates for seats around the horseshoe shows that some "pep" is being put into the campaign, and the situation is best sized up by the comment of an old- timer in ecivie elections, who re- marked Tuesday night, "the more the merrier." . A Lively Contest, There are no less than seven can- ditates running in Victoria ward, six in Frontenac ward, five. in both Rideau and Cataraqui 'ward, and four in Frontenac, so. this goes to show that there is still somé fight- ing spirit left in the municipal elec- tions here. Five of the present aldermen have been given an acclamation, namely T. A. Kidd, F. J. O'Connor, George "Boyd, J. E. Johnston and R. E. Kent. Thirteen of the present members of council are ,.in the running again for re-election. In Sydenham ward, Ald. Kidd and Ald. F. J. O'Connor have been elect ed by acclamation. Ald. H. F. Ri- chardson retires in this ward, and his place is taken by W, H. Craig, who served in the council a few years ago. In Ontario ward, three of the present members of council have been returned by acclamation, Ald. Boyd, Ald. J. E. Johnston and Ald. Kent, the latter the dean of the council, who has served for over a quarter of a century, In 8t. Lawrence ward, three of the present members of the council are running, Ald. Price, Ald. Wil- liam P. Peters and Ald. Harvey Milne, Joseph Nash dropped into this contest and threw the wrench into an acclamation for the old- timers. Ald. Driscoll and Ald. Godwin are the present members seeking re- election in Cataragui ward. There are three newcomers seeking honors in this ward, Ambrose Shea, Herbert Fowler and John Fife Johnston. - Three of the old members of the® council are out for re-election in Frontenac ward -- Alds, William 1 Holder, Howard Kelly and George Joyce. Sargent. William James Gates, William James Lee, Prof. John Macgillivray and Charles Henry Wood are the new men. in this field. School Trustees. H. D.
