PERMANENT ROAD PAVING THS YEAR Kingston Has Now Over Fifteen and a Half Miles of Im= proved Roadways. According to the report submitted to the Board of Works at its final meeting on Wednesday afternoon by City Engineer Dick, the programme this year was the largest ever under- taken by the city, there being 58,143 square yards of pavement constructed, covering a length of 3,001 miles. This brings the total length of permanent pavements up to 15,783 miles, out of a total of 38,245 miles of improved streets, The streets paved include York, from Barrie to Division; King, from Princess to Queen; Queen, from Ontario to Montreal; Frontenac, from Union to York; Sydenham, from Prin- cess to Ordnance; Ordnance, from Sy. denham to Clergy; Earl, from Barrie to University; Barrie, from York to Pine; Rideau, from Barrack to Catara- qui; Barrack, from Rideau to Welling- ton; Stephen, from Montreal to Divi- sion. Approximately six miles of streets were treated with road oil this year, and though the cost exceeded that of last year, better satisfaction was re- ceived in many ways. The roads up to the present time, are in excellent con- dition, and it is noteworthy that not one complaint was received by reason of the oil tracking into houses, al- though thirty cubic yards less of sand were used for covering than in the pre« vious year. The cost this year was $3,- 670.38, against $3,339.82 in 1923. The city has on hand about five hundred gallons of oil, which can be used for treating patches early in the spring. Street watering cost $7,326.60 this year, against $4,831.20 last year, The difference in cost is due to the contract price for teams being 60c per hour this year while last year the city paid.only 40c, per hour. The cost this year for cleaning pave- ments was $6,220.05, against $6,273.30 last year. Approximately two miles extra pavement which was built in 1923, had to be added to the list for cleaning and three miles constructed this year for about an average of four * months. Using the team of the fire de- partment for picking up the refuse helped materially to keep the cost down this year. Approximately 5 1-3 miles of the oil ed roatls were patched with cold patch- ing material, and some of the patches afterwards treated with oil to seal them. SUNBURY COMMUNITY BALL IS OPENED By Judge Lavell on Wednesday Evening--Woman's Insti= tute Deserves Praise. The official opening of the new commuiity hall at Sunbury took place on Wednesday eveming when about three humdred were present for the event, The programme anl the arrangements were in charge of the Sunbury branch of the Woman's Institute. A. W. t, the local agricultural representative, acted as chainman. About two years ago when the township hall at Sunbury was de- stroyed by fire, it was thought that it would be very difficult to erect a new ome on account of the amount of money which would be needed. The members of the Sunbury Wo- man's Institute had a vision that a new hall would be built and after holding a number of and raising some money, the execu- tive committee went to the to' council and made a proposition t the effect that the Institute would be responsible for a certain sum if the township would pay the rest. The council accepted the suggestion of the women who went ahead and secured their portion of the money needed. The mew hall, which cost about § : 'township. It is equipped with rd wood floors and also a kitchen, viable an Mem) pisce for. soem 3,500, is certainly a credit to |' The British Whig KINGSTON, ONT. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING. MONARCH BATTERY FACTORY. Is Even Now Running Night and Day Shifts. Another Kingston factory which is not feeling the pinch of these so- called hard times is the Monarch Battery Factory which even in this slack season is running day and night shifts, twenty-four hours "a day. In the spring a new and very greatly enlarged plant will meed to be constructed. Two travellers are kept on the road distributing the product, The sale is chiefly in Cen- tral and Eastern Ontarfo with occa- sional shipments to the Maritime Provinces or to the west. One of the curious features of the business is the sale there {is for Kingston batteries in Niagara where there is a battery factory that sells not a few in Kingston, Distant batteries look juley, one would judge. At this season the demand for car bat- terles falls off very sharply, but the call for storage batteries. for radio keeps the plant going. These bat- teries, though made much like thosé for autos, have slight differences which ensure that perfect evenness of discharge so essential for radio work. BREAKING UP A LONG Break up long rooms by piacing pieces of furniture like tables end sofas at right angles to the longer walls. If the room is too narrow for this, put these pieces along the shorter walls distribute the chairs and other smaller pieces along the room's length. ------ In recognizition of 50 years pub- lic work, Dr. Lewis Mackenzie was ptesented with the freedom of Charge Cash}. - 43 let These Generous Classified Opportunities Cut Down is always ripe for reading. KINGSTON HAS SAVED SUM OF $125,000 By Doing Its Own Permanent Road Paving During Past Eight Years. It is of interest to note that this is the ninth year that Kingston has constructed its own pavements, the plant being bought in 19186. "Ag a very conservative estimate, I would say that during this period a saving of $125,000 has been made over doing the work by contract," says City Engineer Dick. The engineer points out that a statement shows the plant to have earned a surplus of $1,877.64, but the result ig misleading; because the Tiverton, Devonshire and £611 books kept by the department do Ladics' Halr Parior. ala Business Services ASHES--Cleaned out of cellars and yards, clean job done.
