FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN Quoth the manager of the Tremton teem: "Wait tilt this team gets on hard ice," and the Kingston coach:remarked, "Ditto." INGSTON INTERMEDIATES DEFEAT TRENTON BY 3.1 IN HARD GAME Combination Almost Impossible Game Here Wednesday Night, Tobin turned in a dandy game for Kingston last might at Trenton and surprised some of the Kingston fans, who saw him. He was a hard and worker and is a very likely prospect. . --Return (By Staff Reporter.) ~ The Kingston intermediates went _@fother step further in quest of the intermediate O.H.A. title on Monday 'might at' Trenton by defeating the y Trenton intermediate team the score of 3-1 and asia result they have a two-goal lead for the second game of the series, which will played here on Wednesday night. } condition of the "ice was not for fas hockey but the two ve everything they had from f to the final bell and on @ Whole it was a hard-fought bat- tle with neither team having any ance to lay back and take matters . At the end of the first period the score 'stood a 1-1 tie and in the ; d period Kingston notched two gounters but there was no scoring 'done in the last period although Trenton came mighty close to run- ning in one or two. There was very Ifttle: difference In the teams on the 's play and the two goals will a very wide margin on Wed- meaday night -when the teams hook up at the Arena again. Trenton has '8 very fast team and it is expected that they will give the local lads a 'terrible tussle here. As was expected, the ice was very "Soft and was quite watery and clean- combination was out of the ques- although some attempts at com- i play proved successful. Tren- which 1s a combination team, hard to work in their team but the condition of the ice L not permit them to do so and Bfter they had' discovered this fact, tried their best by individual and they uncovered two won- ful stickhandlers in Burns and oniker. How he was able to stickhandle the way he did on that fice, the. wonder of the crowd and it will be a treat to see him in action here. With a fast, hard sheet of ice, this boy will require more than passing attention. Between these two men alome, the Kingston players will find them- selves in for a merry session. Tren- ton has a dandy goal-tender in Brown and some of the saves he made last night were indeed remark- able. He was cool and collected at all times and the thfee shots that did get by him were through no fault of hig rather, the very fine shooting of the local crew, who had thelr shooting eyes with them last might for sure. Trenton's Great Comeback. Kingston were by no means entire masters of the situation despite their 8-1 victory and in the last period the Trenton team, playing their whole team up, made a gallant stand and held the "K's" to thelr owm blue line many minutes at a time. Rogers had the time of his busy young life and the Trenton striped crew rained shot after shot at him but he was there every time and those he did not stop were off range, Had Trenton been able to work a better range than they did in that last period when they had a great chance to tie the count, they would have easily ycored a couple of goals, The players were bunched in around the Kingston net and a couple of flips would have dome the trick but the local defence was playing right up to form and ft was a mighty hard job for the Trenton sharp-shooters to get results. It was a hair-raising session for the Kingston team and their few faithful supporters thought that thd goose was cooked but the Kingstons broke out of the momen- tary del of shots rained at them and proceeded to rush repeatedly to the Trenton end of the ice. Under general principle, the man- agement of the Kingston team is op- Posed to players shooting the puck up the ice but this was what had to be done in the case of last night. It was quite Impossible to carry the puck up the ice and there was only one thing left to do, and that was to shoot the puck past the bunched players and follow it. Rooney did this several times in the last few minutes of the game! and nearly succeeded in adding another goal on the Kingston side ot the scoring col- umn but he was turned back by Goal- keeper Brown, who put up a wonder- ful game all through. Local Defence Strong. Roy Reynolds on defence for the Kingston team was unable to show his proper form last night as an offensive player and his well known spectacular rushes were not in prom- inence but defensiely vhe turned In a strong game-and with Rooney, his side kick, he invariably 'sent the Trenton attackers to the corner and mighty few, if any, attempts were made by the Trenfon puck-catrriers, to go through the Kingston defence. Rooney and Reynolds kept the Tren- ton boys shooting either from the gave Rogers ample opportunity to see the puck as it was shot from the sticks, of the home team. The de- fence worked a well-planned game all evening and the fact that King- ston emerged victorious 1s due much to thelr good work. Trenton found the local defence a nut much too hard to erack in the heavy going but whether they will be able to get on Wednesday night. is another ques- tion. Trenton is a fast ice team, just as well as Kingston and lest nigh was the first time this they have played on On Wednesday afterncon we will have with us again the Queen's juniors and R.M.C. juniore. There was no great amount of "reszing" of players or referee and the game passed off much smoother than many a group semi-final in this section of the country has, before it. Harold Farlow will handle the bell Trenton-Kingston game. Here's hoping here on Wednesday night in the the roughneck who threw the Farlow the last time he was here, will keep hie time. . He may need them. ---- of them, they handled the shots of the Trenton team well. Rogers was on the alert and though the heavy smoloe was a strain on him as well as the rest of the players, he turned everything aside and his performance was great. Rooney rushed as he has never rushed before and he was right on for a good night. Had he been playing on hard ice there woul have been no stopping him. As it 'was, he was one of the best men on the ice and turned in a very remarkable game. Reynolds was regarded by the Trenton fans as "the big guy" and nearly everything he did was Closely watched. The Trenton players did not back up from him but on the other hand they did not walk right in on him and he was able to keep their attacks 'from his side, well away. He checked hard ail through. Joe Smith, Watts and Johnston work- ed hard, Watts playing an especially fine game while Joe Smith as per us- ual was right there every minute of the play. He went the whole sixty minutes on the heavy going with the exception of two penalties and was a valuable man to the Kingston teani. Lawlor played well and seemed to be able ¢o stickhandie in spite of the heavy ice while Tobin, 'who also play- ed in -the Queen's-R.M.C. game om Saturday night for Queen's, played remarkably well. He tended to his work every minute and was a hard worker, -- First Period. Reynolds uncorked a couple of nice rushes but it remained for Johnston, seven minutes after the period started, to run in the second Kingston goal when he picked up a loose puck after Tobin had lost it. It 'was quick action on Johnston's part and caught Bowen somewhat off his ghand. With the score 2-1 against them the Trenton players put up sturdier opposition and Burne wes brought into the attack quite frequently. He was given the puck at every oppor- tunity and rushed well time and time again but he was unable to ogister. Trenton made a determined stand and checked and rushed well but they overskated the puck frequently and lost it to the locals who were not slow to take advantage of the slips of their opponents. With sixteen minutes of the play gone, Watts, af- ter checking around the Trenton de- fence, took hold of the puck and on a beautiful angle shot, let Bowen have it for the third Kingston tally. This seemed about enough for the Trenton team and they held on fast until the end of the second frame, the Kingston: temm 'being unable to score. Third Perdod. Trenton made a wonderful come- back in the third period and it was minutes they left their defence to the care of ome man and brought the oth- er up on the forward line in hopes of lowering the score at least, but it was all to no avail. i The Trenton lads coud hot keep up this bombardment of the Ki nets long and the tide finally turned.
