I think it isa curse just as bad as poison. They not only catch foxes and dogs, but rabbits by the hund- reds, which are left in the swamp to rot, also as inducement for dogs. These rabbits, some say, are good to eat, If so, that is violating the law, ag no animal suitable for food shall be let go to waste. Mr. Shaw says in his letter that some parties have united their ef- forts in the form of a petition to stop him from catching fox, ete., which is not true. "It is true that there has been a petition signed but it is not meant for any special individual, and is for no other pury pose than to prohibit nares. MF, Shaw also says that most of people who signed the petition are men who hunt without license and on the Lord's Day, which is mot true. I don't believe there are three who hunt at gil. 'They are just far- mers who don't believe it is right to snare. Anyone. reading Mr, Shaw's letter would think he never violated the law, The last deer I killed Mr. Shaw Bot half, and it was killed in open season without license... Mr. Shaw says that the country for miles around Is frequented by deer. In all my fox hunting I have never seen a deer track. He says he never 6ets traps and #nares without ask- ng permission, which is not true, as he has had traps and snares set on my place and he did not ask per- mission. I 4lso know where he hag snares set on private property .and he never asked permission. Iama farmer and a great lover of good dogs and also like to hunt a little in spare time. Who has a better right to a little sport than the far- mer who has to work twelve months in the year, but if this snaring is carried on we will have to stop, as after his dog and watch him all the time when he is hunting. © Mr. Shaw says he has caught a few dogs and thinks If he loses a fox or two that is punishment enough. That is poor pay for the owner whose dog is worth maybe $50. The readers may judge be- tween he and me. The Lord will judge later, =--JOHN N. RITCHIE. ti TY Canadian Pacific.
