Bride: "My husband's mother has kindly given us a carpet which is rather faded but still good. Can you tell me how to freshen its appear- ance?" Answer: Colors in rugs and carp- ots may be freshened in three ways: 1 Sponge with a mixture of one part ox gall to two parts water. 3. Sponge with one quart of water coataining ohe teaspoon of household ammonda. 3. Sponge with ordinary salt and water. If you can decide upom the ammonia solution you should experi. ment on a small corner of the carpet before going ahead with the 'entire surface, for certain colors are affect. od by ammonia whiter end may fade even more, in which case the original color may be restored by sponging with vinegar and water mized hall in half. Some housewives maintain that faded carpets can be rejuvenated by being brushed with a broom dip- ped in warm water which contains a little spirits of turpentine, but I have never tried this method per sonally. Oharlott: "My husband does not like fruit cake, but recently ate some Strudel and thonght it ine, Can you | give me a receipt for this?" Answer: | have two recipes for Strudel, ong "Apple Strudel" and the other a German cheese cake called Strudel, but they do hot seem to be what you mean. However I shall publish'the one that comes nearest to it: "Apple Strudel: Rub three tahle- spoons of butter into one and one- fourth cups of pastry flour, add a pinch of salt, one beaten egg, and enough sweet milk to make a paste the consistency of ple crust ( I regret to say that this contributed recipe did not give the exact amount of wilk). Now place the paste on a floured board, roll it'thin, and spread over it the following mixture: Com- bine one pint of apples which have been measured after being peeled, cored and chopped, one cup of bread crumbs, one-half coup of chopped raisins, one-third cup of chopped al- monds and ome teaspoon of ground cinnamon, Fold # over and again rot] thin, thed roll it up with your fingérs as you, would a jelly-roll. shape it like the figure eight and bake in a moderate oven for 45 min- utes, basting now and them with a little melted butter, Serve sliced, hot or cold, with a sweet hot fruit pudding sauce." EASY TO REMOVE An easy way to put up valances that can be easily removed is to fix them as follows: Get a curtain rod as long as thes window's width. Cover it with the same material as the valance and sew on curtain rings at regular intervals. At the same intervals, sew hooks on the valance.
