On Monday evening about two hundred citizens, who are Interest ed in the work which is being car- ried on by the local branch of the Navy League of Canada, gathered at the Catholic Assembly hall, Wel- lington street, and had the pleasure of listening to a very interesting and inetructive address by Major- General Lessard. General Lessard is visiting the various branches of the Navy Leegue in the dominion. He was delighted with the showing of fifty-two Sea Cadets who were on parade on. Monday evening. When MAJOR-GENERAL LESSARD the general entered the auditorium, @ general salute was given by the Sea Cadets under the supervision of Mr. Arthur Raven. General Lessard in a very capable manner, dealt with the naval mat- ters which are of such great import- ance at the present time. The ad- dress was similar to that which he gave to the Kiwanis Club, which is published in this issue. At the close of the address a hearty vote of thanks was extended to General Lessard, on motion of Bishop Bid- well, seconded by General Sir A. C. Macdonell: During the evening an exhibition of boxing, signalling and first aid was given by the cadets, Mr. Charles Harvey, in a very fine voice, sang "Rule Britannia." Mr. Harvey and Mrs. Jerome sang a duet and solos were given by Staff Sergt. Wood, Miss Pilley and Sergt- Major Betts. Miss Jean Duncan gave a Scotch sword dance, and she was accompanied on the bag pipes by Pipe Major Stewart of the Royal Military College. Colonel J. C. N. Leslie, president of the local league, occupied the chair, SIX MONTHS ADDED. To: the Sentences of Two Convicts Who Escaped. W. Brad- shaw on Monday afternoon and had six months added to their sentences. The two men had intended to go be- fore judge and jury, but they chang- ed their'minds and appeared before Magistrate Bradshaw, pleaded guilty fo the charge and had six months added to their sentences, 'The men will have to finish their original sentence and then serve the additional sentence. Grice was sen- tenced at Hamilton and Westenhater was sent down from Kitchener. "Late Simon J. Smith, In Chicago on Feb. 8th, | away a former resident of ? County, in the person of Simon J. late. Mr. YNCA HOLDS CIRCUS Which Drew a Crowd Monday Night--The.. Performance Was Excellent. A real circus, "first chop and no mistake" as our grandfathers used to say struck town last night and drew a crowd that filled the Y.M. C.A. gymnasium and overflowed into the side shows and fortune-telling booths. Clowns, acrobats, black- face artists and brazen show "girls" thronged the halls and made a gala night of it in the old institution. Like all good circuses the pro- Framme started with a grand parade, performers, clowns, animals and' all, One of the best numbers of the ev- ening followed immediately, It was a fine tumbling act by C. O. Cham- berlain, thé physical director, togeth- er with F. Sanders, J. Blake, G. Thompson, and V, Coe. They show- ed surprising agility and strength and the work of two or three won particular applause. A tragedy succeeded when the clowns found it necessary to operate on a sufferer. The realism of the performance could hardly have been exceeded and the growth which was removed would have pleased any resident of Frankfurt. The patient is believed to be doing as well as could be expected. : A drill by the Junior B group, showed the thoroughness of the training which. is being given regu- larly in the less showy part of gym- nasium work, by which young bod- les are built up in strength and sym- metry, An exciting yacht race against time was won by Earl Pigeon with the very great assistance of Ernfe Madrand and Sid. Arthey. This number was put on by the Y's Men's Club. The junior employed group then showed what they could do diving and tiger-leaping, Considering the short run thel* work was remark- able and drew much applause. Bill Coffee and Earl Waterman then solved a few cross-word puszles and several other problems besides. The parallel bar team consisting of the Sanders brothers and G. Thompson put 6n an exhibition which has seldom been equalled for finish, variety, and difficulty, It was a pleasure to watch the ease with which these boys accomplished the difficult tasks they set themselves. The clowns then showed a stranger the milky way in a way that left him rather milky and then the Junior A, group gave a finished exhibition of pyramid building thai brought the excellent programme to a close. During the intermissions and at the conclusion the YMCA. orchestra gave selections. Mr, Willlam Keat- ing as ringmaster, with stove:pipe hat, cracking whip aad fund of jokes filled a necessary 'part of the 'programme' Very dash- ing boys sold portable refreshments. Despite their attire they were ad- dressed as Miss Chadwick and Miss Osborne, : At the conclusion of the main per- formance the side-shows did a rush- ing trade. In the auditorium the Royalite Concert Party did their stuff in a manner that sent all home highly pleased; and for the mystic: ally inclined there were gypsies who could see the past, presest and fu- ture with unerring skill. The Misses Truesdale, Lytle, and Sinclair, repre- sentative of the Ladies' Gym Class, attended to this agreeable feature. Great credit is due to Mr, W. Mus- selman, chairman of the physical work committee, who not only super- | vised the general arrangements but placed the admirable decorations of red and white streamers and flowers all about the gymnasium. To Mr. *C. O. Chamberlain, the physical dir ector, the greatest praise is due for the finish and variety of this suc- cessful exhibition whith, in a finan- cial and every other way, attained its objective.
