Dr. Bell on §gnday urged the members of Sydenham Street Meth- odist church to write to Dr. A. E. Rose and ask him to support the bill To the People To Observe the Forty Lent. Days "Oould'st thou not watch with Me one hour?" was the theme of the Bishop of Ontario's pre-lenten ser- mon preached in St. George's cathe- dral on Sunday morning. The call of Lent, said the bishop, is the call to come closer to Christ, to under- stand Him better. It is a personal call. 'The church caus us aside for a brief space from the life of plea- sure just for this. Not in obedience to an arbitrary law, but as a volun- tary offering of our time and plea- sure. Christ asked tne disciples to tarry near Him in the Garden of Gethsemane and when He returned He found them sleeping. He did not upbraid them, He did not reproach them, He was disappointed, that wad all, His friends had not wateh- ed with Him. " The forty days of Lent in which the church commeémorates the Jays Jesus spent in the wilderness, the first days of the way of suffering which led to Calvary, are the call, surely never more needed than to- day, to come aside from the rush of ll 11e and learn more of the faith we profess to believe. The call comes It is for us to turn aside or go hurrying on in || eagerness to grasp the pleasure of the moment. The world will go on. It went on during the forty days nt in the wilderness. It went on during the agony in Gethse- mane. It went on while Christ hung on the cross. We can go on with li] it if we wish or we can turn aside Save the coupons, 8 pkgs. 28¢c. |i and watch with Him.
