Toronto, Feb. 23.--A victim of a peculiar accident, Jackie Griffen, two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Griffen, Hes in a serious con- dition at the Hospital for Sick Chil- dren. The child bit the cord of an electric curling tong, sustaining severe burns to his mouth. He re- ceived a heavy shock and it requir- ed two minutes to pull the cord from the child's mouth. Straus, President American Society for Thrift italian Village Believed Crushed Under Landslide Rome, Feb. 23.--Volunteers are searching for the village of Osla-to near Spluga Pass. It is feared that this little cluster of houses and all its inhebitants have been crushed in the landslides which have crash- ed down the mountain sides with the last week. ' Snow in the Pass Is nine feet deep. A squad of custom men 'have not returned to their barracks since Saturday. It is feared that they perished in the fierce snow- storm, that swept the Pass during the week-end. v Foul ¥lay Suspected. Montreal, Feb. 23.--The disap- pearance of Richard MacBriere Smith, aged thirty-nine, a native of Charlottetown, P.E.l, is engaging the attention of the authorities here.
