C. 0. Chamberlain, secretary of the Kingston Soft Ball League, in- formed the Whig that up until Sat- urday evening ten teams had applied for admission to the league which is in the course of formation. The names of the teams which have made formal application are: Rotary, Y's Men, Y.M.CAA., Dry Goods, Bankers, Business men of Princess street, Davis Tannery, | Canadian Pacific and Dominion Ex- Dress, Hillcrest Athletic Club and the Frontenac Regiment. It is expected that a number of other teams will make formsl apph- cation to join the league before Mon- day night. The entries were billed to close on Saturday evening. The secretary stated that a meat- ing of the executive of the league will be held on Monday and it is ex- pected that a committee would be appointed to draw up the schedule. When asked if the league execu- tive had decided ,where the games would be played, Mr. Chamberiain isle that it was hoped that the nard property at the foot of Al- bert street, which 1s owned by Queen's University, might be secur- ed, but there was nothing definite. This field is very large and ft would certainly be an ideal place. It is un- derstood that the executive plans to have games played at other points in the city as one fleld is not large enough. He is an old favorite with Canadian race-goers, who liked him a8 a racehorse of class, a horse to go fast and stay, and a sire of winners on the flat. "Chief" Bender and Oscar Dugey of the champion Phil- lies of 1915 were two of the clever- est in the game at grabbing signs from the pitcher. They found out that dozens of major league pitchers were holding their balls as shown above, unconsciously advertising every ball they threw. By a pre-ar- ranged word-sign, any time Bender and Dugey shouted "make it good" to the hitter, he knew a curve ball was coming. If they told him to "crack it," he was set for a fast ball. -------- INDIA 1S TAXING STEPS FOR STRONG DAVIS TEAM. Lahore, British India, April 27.-- The All-India Tennis Association has cabled the manager of its Davis Cup team to instruct 8. M. Jacob and Dr. A. H. Fyzee, members of the team, now in England, to give the under- takings necessary to bring about re- storation of their playing status. The two stars were suspended from tournament play by the Brit- ish Lawn Tennis Association early this week following a controversy over the payment of expenses of a trip to Paris last year by a team of they were members. London, Ont., April 27.--A. A. Langford, president of the Dominion Bowling Association, has received several communications from bowl- ers in Western Ontario who are in- terested in making the proposed visit to New Zealand. The Dominion President requests that the Secre- tarfes of the different associations se- cure the names of the bowlers in their districts who are interested in making the trip. These names will be forwarded to R. T. McLean, Hon. Secretary of the Dominion Lawn Bowling Association, Toronto. A meeting will be called and the response will depend on whether or not the invitation is accepted. Al- ready several bowlers have asked to be considered as members of the team. If the invitation is accepted the team will probably leave in the mid- dle of November, reaching Auckland early in December. If it is desired to visit Australia also the bowlers will return to Canada about the end of February. -------- ¥Safs Open Wednesday. The Toronto Leafs will likely ny come home for Wednesday's opener strictly in the contention for tha ~~ falon and the array of new talent that Howley has included in his up will make the advent of the locals an event of special interest. Such has been the infusion of new blood that every section of the team will have something new to offer. For the first time in some years the Leafs look to have a catcher who knows how to sock the sphere in proper style and the Detroit recruit is now easily leading the team in batting 'with the lusty average of 379 for nine games. Not only is Manion the batting hero, but he is also the slugging impressario with four doubles and a homer to his credit. - Second in the list of batting aver- ages and possibly not that far down in point of interest is Carlyle, the youngster who the critics claim may some day acceptably fill the role * ated by the one and only Tyrus. 46 young southermer boosted his average materially during the week, and is now hitting them at .326, and soon bids fair to be giving his fellow Detroiter a good run for the premier honors. fLlao- Fair in November last, where he was awarded first prize and the cham- pionship.
