In Toronto nothing is known of BLEACHER STAND FOR THE BALL GANES [Tenders Will Be Called for the | Concession to Erect Stand at Fair Grounds. The question of the erection of a | bleacher stand at the fair grounds, | for the baseball teams, was again | betore the civic property committee, | at a meeting held on Thursday af- | ternoon, and it was decided to call i for tenders for a concession for the erection of a stand. The stand will { be erected in accordance with the | specifications provided by the city engineer, and it is proposed that the admission fee to the stand winl be placed at 25 cents. At a recent meeting of the com- mittee, an offer was received from Ex.-Ald. Greenleaf, of Belleville, to erect a stand. He proposed to put up a stand of one section, to accom- modate 240 people, with the idea of rutting up another section and more if required. The matter was discussed at some length, and the members felt that tenders should be called for in order to given any person a chance to tender for the concession. The privilege of selling ice cream { for the ball games was granted to George Palavos, for the sum of §50. r | | ° MARIE CROLES | The steamer Maplehill cleared west this morning. Prescott, May 15.--Engineers in- vestigating the feasibility of the canalization of the St. Lawrence river were delayed in their work for a few days at Barnhart's Island in the Long Sault rapids, where diffi- culty was experienced in rock dril- ling recently. A shaft is to be sunk in the island and drilling will be carried on striking out horizontally from the shaft below the river bed. Depth and swiftness of the Long Sault rapids prohibited them from drilling vertically from pontoons, ac- cording to the regular custom. TWO OIL PAINTINGS NEED RETOUCHING But Property Committee Has No Money to Expend on This Work. There are two oil paintings in Memorial Hall sadly in need of re- touching--that of Sir John A. Mac- donald and Hon. John Hagerman, but the civic property committee has no funds with which to do the work, which would entail an ex- penditure of $600 or more, and fit looks as if the pictures will not re- ceive attention. Ald. Nash brought the matter be- fore the attention of the commit- tee some weeks ago, but no action was taken, and the question was again taken up at a meeting of the committee held Thursday afternoon, and again no action was taken, for the reason that the committee has no money to spend on this work, ow- ing to the fact that the budget for the year is so heavy. Alds. Craig and Shea suggested that the Kingston Conservative As- sociation might be asked to take up the matter. Some time ago it wag suggested that the Historical So- ciety might act in the matter.
