The CLUB 3 Doots Below Opera House | HIGHWAY DEPARTNENT| WRITES THE COUNTY, With Regard to th to the Reduction of the Road Mileage As~ sumed by Province. At the June session of the county council, which convenes at the court house on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock, standard time, it is expected that considerable business 'will be transacted. The question of a num- ber of roads, which for years Rave been inciuded in the good system, and which have been transferred to the township system, will be consid- ered. J. 'W. Bradshaw, clerk of the county, received the following letter tfom the Ontario Highway Depart- ment and it speaks for itself. We are forwarding you under separate cover a map of Fronténac County showing in red, the revised county rbad system as prepared by the departthent of public highways in accordance with the recommenda- tions of the highway advisory com- mittee. This map received the conaiters- tion recently of both the advisory committee and a representative com- mittee from your council and the roads designated thereon are the outcome of their mutual delibera- tions. That a' re-adjustment of county road mileage throughout the pro- vince was found both expedient and desirable by the cotinties themselves, was fully explained at a recent con- ference by Mr. 8. L. Squire, deputy minister highways, who, with the meémbers of the advisory committee, made a special study of the system in every éounty durffig the summer and fall of 1924. diols an av- erage reduction-of about twenty-five per cent. has been made in the mile- age of county roads throughout the province. Special attention has been paid to the dpterlocking of each county road system with those of surrounding counties and with the provincial highway system as well. As a result of this some counties are experienc- ing reductions that are considerably in excess of others (being as high as 42 per cent., in one instance) while again certain reductions are fecessarily smaller-owing to the en- deavor to develop an effective and impartial system of inter-county thoroughfares. ~ - In your system as the map will indicate, there has been a reduction in mileage of 8.1 per cent. The new system totalling 151.2 miles as com. pared with 164.5 miles in the old. The new system includes 6.0 miles of newly added roads in order that a more compact system will result. The attached by-law forms and schedule blanks are forwarded to you to expedite the adoption by your council of the newly arranged sys- tet. You will please note that the minister is desirous of having your by-law Defore him for final consider- ation and approval at an early date, This Jehateal Age. July Yale Revie What religion 'does the present age possess in the Occident? We have Christianity, which is a "Marvellous ethical system, skillfully blended with pre-Christian ritual, to produce a creative force which has in our days largely lost the creative energy it possessed. Sixty years ago it was no longer considered possible to re- conéile the mythical and poetical truth of Christianity with the biolo- gic tacts of science; men were ob- liged to take sides; we had Darwin and Huxley on the one hand, New- man and Patmore on the other. Now- adays it is even more doubtful it we can reconcile the myths of religion with the new myths of science--af- ter Einstein and Niels Bohr it is im- possible to say that science possesses any facts. - At the utmost all that we possess is a theory, made to fit cer- tain facts, which is past its prime, 4s opposed to a theory made to fit i! other facts, which is just being born. I] We stand at the threshhold of scien- tific religion, and the "ethereal age," foreshadowed by Henry Adams, Is al ready wpon us. - ------------ SEVEN SENTENCE SERMONS The end of man is an action, and | hot a thought. ~=Carlyle, . * No man can be brave who "consid- ors pain the chief evil of life--The Heroine of the Strait.
