Pleading guilty to a charge of having liquor for sale, a man giving the name of George Tozer, was fined $500, with one month in jail, or in default of the payment of the fine, two months additional. The police raided Tozer's home and seized a quantity of liquor. At the New Library. Work on the new library. building is progressing very fast and an in- spection was made by the Library Board .Tuesday afternoon. It is ex- pected that the children's library will move in next week, but it is not known when the main department will be transferred. Vessels Held Up.' One of the worst gales of the sea- son set in on the lakes on Monday morning, and as a result quite a fleet of vessels were forced to remain Jin port. One of the Canada Steam- ship boats cleared from Swift's wharf but was forced to return to port, owing to the fact that the wind was very high. Buys Palatial River Home. 8. H. Vandergrift, Washington, D.C., for years a summer resident, has sold his summer home on Long Rock, near Grenell Island, about five miles from Clayton, N.Y. The new owner is G. Alexander Leonard, Syracuse, N.Y. The Vandergrift sum- mer home is one of the finest on the river. Cut Arteries in Foot. James Bunnett, Shannonville, met with an accident, on Saturday, when he cut the side of his right foot with an axe. The arteries were severed and the patient will be laid up in bed for some time. Some years ago Mr. Bunnett fractured the ankle of this foot and was slightly lame in that foot. Fire Razes Residence. Baturday the house of = William Beresford, near the head locks at Cardinal, was burned to the ground together with all its contents. Smithies of the Grand Theatre has engaged a com- plete new orchestra for the Grand Theatre, under the direction of Miss Mignon Telgmann, one of the best- known musicians in this part of the country. The new orchestra played for the first time on Monday night, and delighted the large audience that attended the road show playing at the Grand. The orchestra is com- posed of five pieces and should make a big hit with patrons of the Grand Theatre. ------------ I No Serious Damage. i The manager of the Public Utili- ties Commission reports no serious damage to the lights and electric lines during Monday night's heavy, gale. Four men were busy most of the day repairing damage done by the wind to electric lines. Raney, pastor of Queen street United church, is con- fined to his home, suffering from shock and bruises sustained when he fell down stairs in his home on Stinday- afternoon. Mr: Raney was able to conduct the evening services at hig church, but the effects of his accident have forced him to rest up; for a few days. Thief in Room Woke Sleepers. The home of Ald. George Foster, Belleville, was entered early Mon- day by a thief, who secured a gold watch and chain, a fountain pen and an everready pencil from a suit of Mr. Fostér's, hanging in the clothes closet at the top of the stairs. Pppwl- ing about the house brought the sneak thief into the room where Mr. and Mrs. Foster were sleeping and he was disturbed in his quest by Mrs. Foster waking up and informing her husband. The thief escaped, the po- lice were notified. Status of Wife A Minutes of settlement filed and confirmed by the First Divisional Court at Osgoode Hall set aside the judgment of Justice Orde which found that Rosey Knowlton was not the legal wife of the late John N. Knowlton, township of Crosby, near Brockville, and consequently neither she nor the three children she had by him were his legal heirs.
