L. freight sheds. -- Sentenced to Three Months. Three months' imprisonment in Brockville jail was the sentence meted out at Smith's Falls to Roy Priget, Montreal, on a charge of is- suing a cheque for which there were no funds. On Sept. 10th, Priget re- ceived a quantity of merchandise from H. B. Polk, Lombardy, for which he tendered a cheque drawn on the Smiths Falls branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. He told Mr. Polk that he was a foreman for the Standard Paving Co., and that his cheque was good in any Smith's Falls bank. Later it devel- oped that he had no account in any of the banks of that town and a war- rant was issued for his arrest. Priget was subsequently arrested in King- Died at Hay Bay. Elliott have re- ceived invitations to a luncheon in the York Club, Toronto, on Friday, to talk over the Dominion-wide con- ference at Winnipeg, in November, sponsored by the Boards of Trade of Canada, in the hope of furthering unity between all the provinces, com- mercially and fraternally. Won a Beauty Prize. Miss Hope Smith, Brockville, out of over two thousand girls at a large ball held recently in Ottawa was ad- judged the most beautiful, Miss Smith received a large sterling silver cup as a prize. The judges were Controller" Frank Plant, of Ottawa, Professor F. H. Sinclair, dancing master, and others. New Liberal Speaker. The Liberals have discovered ,in Mrs. Richards, a new orator to preach their principles to the wo- men voters in the party. Mrs. Rich- ards has a long ancestry of stalwart Liberals, being a member of the Curtis family that for over 100 years have owned a farm in the outskirts of Warkworth. Mrs. L. B. Glover, Campbellford, is a sister. Death of Samuel Carson. Samuel Carson, Brantford, form- erly of Fuller, died on Oct. 8th after a lingering illness of about two years, aged sixty-five years. He leaves his wife, two sons, Fred and Clifford, both of Brantford, and three brothers, James, Picton, William, Belleville, and Andrew, Crookston, also three sisters, Mrs. A. Grier, Tweed; Mrs. Albert Mitz, Fuller; and Mrs. Charles Cook, To- ronto. Appointed Railway Superintendent. The Sudbury ' Star reports that Fred M. Donegan, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Donegan, formerly of Perth, has been appointed superin- tendent of the Algoma Eastern Rail- ways the appointment to take effect immediately. Mr. Donegan has been in the employ of the Algoma East- ern Railways since 1914 and dur- ing that time has held several im- portant positions which led up to his appointment as superintendent. Gave Recital at Picton. Miss C."Ann Folkard gave a reci- tal at Castle Villeneuve, Picton, on Thursday evening, Oct, 15th. Mr. Pratt, A. R.A.M., assisted with vocal selections. Both Mr, Pratt and Miss Folkard have marked ability along musical lines and gave much evi- dence of being gifted musicians. Both received their training in the British Isles, and Miss Folkard is at present organist of St. Gregory's church, Picton. To Build More Boats. An order has been placed with Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineer- ing Company, Ltd., of Hull, Englandf for two new grain boats to operate on the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes. A similar order has been placed with the firm of Napier & Mil- ler, of Old Kirkpatrick, Glasgow, and the four vessels are to be delivered in the spring to the Eastern Steam- ship Company. At present there are seventeen ships being operated on the lakes and river by this com- pany. Perth Buys Bush Lot. The corporation of Perth will re- main in the wood business stronger than ever during the present fall and coming winter having purchased a splendid bush lot in Bathurst town- 'ship from Messrs Richard A. and 'William Popplewell. The bushlot is situated about ten miles from Perth between the 4th and 5th concessions of Bathurst and contains in the neighborhood of seventy acres, sixty acres of which is the very best of hardwood and the remainder hem- lock and basswood.
