Pittsferry, Oct. 23.--These fine fall days are a great help ,to the farmers with their ploughing. The chicken supper, held at the Orange :| Lodge, in aid of St. John's church, was a decided success. The tables were well loaded with good things to eat, and the programme put on by the choir of Cooke's church, King- ston, was all thet could be desired. The proceeds amounted to over seventy-five dollars. Miss Anne Maitland, Brooklyn, N.Y. is visiting with her parents, Mr. and Ms. George Maitland. A large number attended the funeral of the late Mrs, Ambrose Payne, on Monday last. The deceased has lived in this vicinity a number of years and was a highly respected citizen. She leaves two sons here, Harvey and Thomas, and also four sons living in the west. The deceased was seventy- eight years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Mosier and 'children, Wolfe Island, spent a few days this week with Mrs. E. Orr. Mr, and Mrs, Walter Tomlison and son, Kingston, also a few more friends from the city spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Paddle, other visitors at the same place were Percy Hammond and Miss Annie Genge, Gananoque, Mr. and Mrs. William Graham and little daughter. Albert Fox, who formerly lived with his parents at Godfrey, Fronte- nac county. Mr. Fox is moving this week to Chicago with his family where he has a position with the Messenger Company at $6,000 a year. It is ten years this fall since Mr. Fox first began to work in the interests of that company. Egerton Wannamaker, Salem, was a visitor in the village yesterday, when he had some bank business to do. Ray Terry's sale on the fourth concession was held yesterday. He will move to Florida with his family shortly. a ------ A DISASTROUS FIRE. Frank Smith, Ohaffey's Locks, Was a Bufferer. Chaftey's Locks, Oct. 23.--~A num- ber from here attended the informal dance in the new Community hall, at Elgin, on Wednesday, the 21st. The music was furnished by the popular Midnight Ramblers, Smith's Falls, and was appreciated by all. A good time was enjoyed by the large num- ber present. Yesterday evening a fire broke out in a straw stack joining Mr. Frank Smith's barn destroying the season's crop and all the outbuildings includ- ing seven fatted pigs ready for mar- ket and a valuable hound. With hard work the dwelling house was saved. Mrs. Smith and daughter were alone when. the fire broke out. A. W. Dwyer is still very low; no hope | being held out for his recovery. SECURED TWO GEESE.
