Ross Elected in Kingston By the Decisive Majority of 1,612 Great Re Was a Surp The electors of Kingston and Portsmouth on Thursday elected Hon. Dr. A. E: Ross, the Conserva- tive candidate, as their representa~ tive in the House of Commons at Ottawa. Dr. Ross had a majority of 1,812 over the Liberal candidate, Mr. J. Mm Campbell, It was the general opinion that the contest in Kingston would be a very close one, and the big majority poll- ed by Dr. Ross came as a great sur- Prise to both parties. ' Dr. Ross had a majority in every ward. The Advance poll alone gave 2 majority to Mr. Campbell, the vote being-29 to 17. The sweeping victory of the Con- af | Servative candidate brought about great rejoicing in the Conservative ranks. Hon. Dr. J. W. Edwards, Conservative candidate in Frontenac and Addington, was also elected bya very large majority, and when the result was known, Conservatives of the city and county joined in a cele bration, a special feature being a parade of the down-town streets, when the successful candidates were carried\ on the shoulders of their supporters. It was certainly a big f night in the local Conservative camp, || the celebration being carried on un- til & very late hour. The voters' list showed that there in Conservative Ranks--Dr. Ross' Majorit Surprise on All Sides--The Results by Wards. 4 were 15,080 votes in the riding, of this number Portsmouth having 609. There were 11,656 votes; recorded, and of this number Portsmouth poll- ed 512. In the election for the federal house on Dec. 6th, 1921, Dr. Ross owt A. E. Receiving the Returns. The polls were open from 8 am: tll 6 pm. and shortly after § o'clock, 'a very large crowd gathered at the Whig office for the receiving of the returns, The first returns received came from the Advance Poll, and this gave, Mr. Campbell a majority of 12. The other polls began to pour in a short time after the result of the Ad- (Hi vance Poll had been: recorded, and as each one was tabulated, a sub- stantial majority was given in favor of Dr. Ross, and it was not long be- fore a victory was conceded for the Conservative candidate. The returning officer, Mr. Mooers, did not receive the returns from the deputy returning officers on Thurs- day night, and as a result the official figures 'could not be secured by the Whig; but it is not expected that there will be many changes made in the reports, as recelved by the Whig, from the sions. The big majority given Dr. Ross was a great surprise on all sides. Not even the most sanguine in the ranks of the Conservative party, looked for a majority over the thous- and mark; a majority of about 600 was the limit, but the general opin- fon was that the race would be a very close one, and that the winner would be lucky ta have a majority of 300. The cry about unemployment and gefieral discontent over conditions in general, no doubt turned the tide for a Conservative victory. The best of weather prevailed for the getting out of the vote, both sides had a good organizations and although defeated, the Liberals are justly proud of the fight they put up in behalf of the principles for which they stand. Dr. Ross addressed a large gather- fog at the Standard office when the result of the local election was known, and Mr. spoke at the Whig office, returning his sincere thanks to all his support- ers and to the Whig, for its warm support during the campaign. The results of the voting in King- ston and Portsmouth are given else- where in this issue, in tabulated form. The Summary. Campbell.
