For the benefit of the Symphony Orchestra, and under the patronage of His Worship the Mayor, Major- | | General J. H. Blmsley and the of- | ficers and men_of the Kingston gar- | vison, Col. C. ¥. Constantine, the commandant, the staff and gentle- men cadets of the R. M, C, and the Kingston Kiwanis Club, Cameran and Telgmann's comic opera 'Leo, the Royal Cadet" was put on at the Grand Theatre on Monday evening, with a smoothness and pep that was a surprise to those who had the pleasure of seeing it. Prof. O. F. Telgmann's tuneful and inspiring music was played by an orchestra of exceptional merit, led by his daughter, Miss Mignon Telgmann, and the choruses were bright and tuneful, the opening one "Glory and Victory" giving a key to the opera. Pretty girls in fresh . costumes made a charming picture as the colored lights accentuated their beauty, and the cadets and dudes Were true to form. Mr. John Alex- ander, in the title role, took the part excellently, and sang the solos and a duet with "Nellie" in the sym- pathetic tenor Kingston has often heard and admired. Miss Harriet Vair, who has been heard in small- er rooms, where her sweet, clear, vibrant voice won many admirers, sang the part of "Nellie" in a voice a clear enunciation that was very de- lightful. Her frocks were charming and she received several bouquets of flowers. Miss Anna Corrigan as "Caroline" was charming, whether in a pretty frock or in the smart costume of a girl cadet. Her solos and duets were sung with spirit and Sweetness, and with a beautiful clear enunciation, most unusual in amateurs. Miss Leola Telgmann, as "Madge," made an attractive fig- ure. "Wind," Mr. R. G. Betts, was a tremendous favorite with the aud- fence, and Mr. Meuller and Mr. Saunders possess fine voices that showed to good advantage. The duet between the German and the French professors at R. M. C. was splendidly done and brought forth much applause. The King of the dudes was splendid and the Zulu chief who had previously ap- peared as "the man of the world," sang his numbers well. The Zulus made a great hit. The characteristic music splendidly played by the or- chestra and the darkened stage prepared the audience for the ap- pearance of these dusky warriors who, with wild yells, did a dance before attacking their foes, the cadets. But fea some as they were, even the huge one in the centre: of the stage, went down bef6¥e the ofi- slaught of the red coats and after a brief hand to hand conflict not a Zulu was left standing, each be- ing borne down by a victorious cadet. However, "All's well that ends well" and in the last act everything is satisfactory, and the opera ends with the same chorus with which it began, "Glory and Victory." The scenery of the first two and the last act shows Kingston Mills and the Royal Military College somewhat as it was when the opera was written. The performance re- flects the greatest credit upon the actors and upon Prof. and Mrs. O. F. Telgmann, who trained them and no Kingstonian should miss the opportunity of hearing our "own f | Kingston opera produced by such a capable cast. At the coming municipal elections, | the electors will be given an oppor- tunity to vote on a question as to whether or not they are in favor of making improvements to the fair grounds, with the view of ultimately turning it into a first-class amuse- ment park, to be used as a fair grounds, ball park, etc.,, the money to be used, to be raised by deben- tures. This was decided on at a meeting of the city council on Monday night, on motion of Alds. Craig and Chown. It will be recalled that some time ago, Ald. Craig gave notice of mo- tion that he would move to this effect. In moving his resolution, Ald. Craig pointed out that from year to year, the Council voted money for the upkeep of the fair grounds. Considerable money had been expended, and it was a question as to whether it would be adwisable for the city to have something worth while, and the city derive a benefit from the park. Ald. John Fife Johnston suggest- ed that the matter be referred to the Property Committee, Ald. Peters regarded the sugges- tion as a good one. He said there had been a great deal of discussion from time to time as regards what should be done about the fair grounds, and he felt that this pro- position would be the means of clear- ing the air in the matter. He was strongly in favor of having the mat- ter go to the people. Ald. Chown also spoke in favor of the question going to the electors. "I feel the same way as Alds. Chown and Craig," remarked Aid. Reid. "There has been a lot of money wasted on the fair grounds, and I would say that if the fair grounds are not used as an amuse- ment park, that the property be sold." The motion to have the matter put to the people was then carried without further discussion. -------- p= PROBS ---- Wednesday, fresh to strong east to southeast winds--mostly fair. ~ A RC CWE 0 OR 0 A RM SE WEDNESDAY MORNING SPECIAL --FROM 9 TO 1 O'CLOCK 'SALE Women's and Misses' Flannelette NIGHTGOWNS Regular $1.25 to $1.50 values Sale Price 98c 50 doz.
