NOVEMBER 20, 1925. aide THE THE WORK. DONE Of RIDEAU CANAL IN 1830 Buliding of Locks at Kingston Mills--Blockhouses Built for Protection. Ottawa Journal The newspaper review of the Rideau Canal works which appeared early in 1830 set forth the progrees which had been made all along the Jine up to that time. Between the "stupendous works" being carried on at Kingston Mills and those ap- proaching completion at Bytown, all was activity and contractors were hurrying to end their tasks. At King- of cholera on shortly after he Had entered into ston Mills the contractor, Robert August 20th, 1834, partnership with James McCuteh- on in the brewing, distilling sad forwarding business) had a force of nearly 300 men 'at work. These had the masonry of three of the. Jocks well under way. This was built part- ly of limestone brought a distance of four miles from the shores of King- ston Bay and partly of freestone found close at hand. The newspaperman-was much in- terested in the operation of a'species of steamboat which Drummond had constructed for the purpose of pumping out the works. It wus simply a steam engine mounted up- on a séow, yet it was upon this strange craft, remc odelled and christ- ened "The Pumper," that Colonel By and his family, members of his staf, Drummond and a few other asso- « Drummond (who died at Kingston | ciates made the first trip from King- -- ---------------- A AA prt Pad SEAMAN-KENT nish and Wax. The swampy valley at the head of the locks at Kingston Mills was still filled with timber, some of the trees alive and others ia a state of decay. Mr. Drummond was aleo engaged upon the comstruction of a small lock and a small dam at Bower's Lower Mills, having taken over a contract which had been abandoned. Old Block-House. At Brewer's Upper Mills two locks were being built by Mr. Brewer, who, aithough not a practical man, was doing satisfactory work. The material, a freestone, was brought from five miles away. A small dam needed te overflow the Cranberry Marsh had not yet been contracted for, and it was thought that fit would be built by the Engineering Department under the day labor. Nor was the construction of the dam at the Whitefish Falls, the out- let of the Gananoque River system, yet begun. This, too, was a small work. A few years ago a concrete dam took the place of the original structure a short distance from the village of Morton.. On a high rocky bluff overlooking it, there still stands in a state of decay the log block-house which was buflt under Colonel! By's command for the pur- pose of protecting the works. Most of these block-houses have beeu preserved, but that at Morton {8 falling into ruin. At Jones' Falls, however, was great activity. Here Messrs. Me¢Kay & Redpath were the con- tractors. When they arrived to com- mence work, not a tree had been cut, not a building had been erected and there was not a road leading to the place. The mill-site and the land in the vicinity were owned by Hon. Charles Jones. M.L.C., of Brockville, who also owned the water-powers at Yonge Mills, at the Narrows about 'three miles from the Isthmus (Newboro) and at Furnace Falls (Lyndhurst) by virtue of his association with the "Family Com- pact" of the day. Mr. Jones plan- ned the development at Jones' Falls of a village 'to be known as "Charleston," named aftér himself, but this failed to materialize. His town-site of the same name, laid out a decade earlier, was obsorbed in the village of Brockville. McKay & Redpath suffered from the in- accessibility of the place where they to build five locks, a basin and a dam 65 feet in height, the highest on the canal. They were obliged to bring stones for nearly six miles at a cost of 5s 64 per ton of 16 cubic feet to transport and for the purpose of commissariat use, pork cost £3 bs per barrel, potatoes 1s 3d, oats 1s 11d and flour £1 10s per barrell. there Divorce Oase Dismissed.
