Tuesday, February 2, 1926. THE DAILY BRITISH WHIG ---------- : 3 CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE DELIVERED By Salem A. Hart, Jr., Oleve- land, on Fulfillment of Promises. viii ' A large and interested audience essembled in the Christian Science church auditorium 'on Monday even- jug when a lecture on "Christian Science; the fuifillment of scriptural . promises," was delivered by Dr. ..Balem A. Hart, Jr., C.8., of Cleve- land, Ohio, a member of the Board of Lecturesnip of The Mother Church, in Boston, Mass. In introducing the lecturer, Miss Charlotte Lovick, said: "The need of the Universe is to find God or Good. Tennyson voiced the cry of the ages when he sang of his little flower: 'Flower in the crannied wall I pluck you out of the crannies, I hold you here root and all in my hand Little flower but if I could under- stand What you are, root and all, and all in all I should know what God and man is.' "What Tennyson longed to dis- cover our loved leader, Mary Baker Eddy, did discover and gave. tothe | world in our text book, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.' Christian Science not only reveals 'what God and man is' but it reveals the principle of healing through knowledge of God as demonstrated by the Nazareth. Our lec- turers are authorized before being appointed to the Board of Lecture- ship and have successfully demon- strated the rules of Christian Science in healing the sick and loving their neighbors as Jesus commanded." Mr. Hart's Lecture. In pact, Mr. Hart said: When the seventy disciples; whom Jesus had sent forth on a mission of healing, returned with rejoicing, the Bible ""Be- hold, 1 give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing 'shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19). This promise, or assurance, of spiritual power to heal is bedutifully set forth in the following correlative passage on page 55 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key fo the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science: "The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the | spirit and power 'of Christian heal- ing." Webster deflnes the word "pro- mise" as that which causes, or gives ground for, hope, expectation, or as surance. Now, I feel sure that we will all agree that the promises made in the Bible are true, and were made '{for all time; so have we not the ,| right "to 'expect the fulfillment of these promises? - Christian Science answers this question in the affirma- tive, and is fulfilling the promise of health and long life to the afflicted; of deliverance and forgiveness to the sinning; of comfort and protection to the sorrowful; of peace and plenty to those in want and woe; of wisdom and strength to the humble and obedient. It 'fulfills God's promise found in Isaiah: *'And T will bring the: blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: & will make darkness light before them, and crovked things straight. These things Via The pACAE Daily Service To Ship by Truck HIGHWAY TRANSPORT SERVICE will T do unto them, and not forsike them" (Isalah 42:16), So, If there be any here tonight seeking a folus tion for the problem of grief 'and separation; if there be any who are sick or in want; ifithere be any who are 'struggling ' with 'misfortune . or #§ |8in; it; perchance, there be any who for the first timo Nave crossed the threshold of Christian Science, we have for you a joyous message of Love, of deliverance, of comfort, and happiness. Scriptures until the Science of Christianity was fully revealed to her and she became conscious of the fact that the same law which enabled Jesus to heal the man sick of the palsy had healed her, again fulfilling the promise of the Master, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do, shall he do also" (John 14:12). Thoroughly satisfied that hér dis- covery was in accordance with God's law, Mrs. Eddy, undismayed set out to prove her discovery. This pure and spiritually minded woman bore the heat and burden of the day pa- tiently and lovingly, overcame ob- stadles, and gave to the world the re- sult of her search and discovery, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scrip- tures." DOUGHTY T0 AVOID BEING INTERVIEWED He Is Tired of Publicity-- Leaves Penitentiary on Wednesday. John Doughty, former secretary to the late Ambrose J. Small, and who will be released from the Ports- mouth penitentiary on Wednesday noon after completing a six-year sentence on the charge of theft of bonds, the property of his former employer, is tived of . being in the limelight. It is understood that Doughty has made the request that Toronto news paper men and photographers, who will likely be in the city on Wednes- day, be kept 'away from 6 him. Doughty feels that his name Has ap- peared too often in the columns of the newspapers from the Atlantic to the Pacific for the past four years. He feels that he has been more or less the "goat." According to the prison regula- tions, when an outside prisonér is released from the Portsmouth in- stitution, he is taken to the train by an official. It is the duty of this of- ficial 40 see that his man is placed on the train and from that time he is a free man. The regulations call for the prisoner to be given a ticket to the point where he was sentenced, in addition to the sum of $10 for spending money. One of the basic causes of so much discord and sickness to-day is the acceptance by mankind of persondl sense testimony as reliable and true. We are not trusting God when we accept and rely upon the testimony of the senses as real or true, for we are then believing that matter has life, intelligence, and The five physical senses ance and truthful information, and I feel sure many of us have experi- enced striking examples of the fals- ity of sense evidence. Let us consider for a moment two parallel lines, such ag the tracks of a railroad. Sense testimony would have us believe that these two lines converge' into one at a distant point. Can we accept such a statement as true? Certainly not. And why? Because we know the truth about this proposition, and no amount of argument can change it. We also know that the sun does not rise in the morning nor set in the evening. We also know that the earth is not stationary, but revolves on its axis once every twenty-four I hours. We also know that any ob- ject in the distance fs not as small as mortal vision would have ius be- | lieve. And so I could go on and cite many instances of the unreliability of sense testimony. There is a mark- ed difference between understanding and belief, Sense testimony subjects us to many conflicting beliefs, while Truth only is knowable, for there is only one Truth. Mrs. Eddy states on 'page 203 of the Christian Seclence textbook, "If God were understood { instead of being merely believed, this J fined to the prison, he has: adopted the attitude of absolute silence. For the past few days he has been mum in regard to queries. Doughty has made the request that no person be allowed to speak to him from the |j time he leaves the prison until the time he gets on the train, and it is understood that the prison officials will carry out his wish. \ The gates at the prison will open on Wednesday afternoon at 1.15, and Doughty, in charge of Messenger John Kennedy, will go by prison motor to the--Canadian, National outer station where he wh 'be plac- ed on the International Limited, leaving at 1.44 pm.' ry Str ange Stories of Dea the, : # Madawaska, Feb. 2.--Strange stor- {es bearing on the double murder of || Birch Creek, are heard here.
