His whole speech in the Legislature on Thursday was taken up with trying to create sympathy fo* the Provincial Conservative party beéause he pretends to think that it "is 'being persecuted by political enemiiés in the disguise of prohibitionists. .. The facts are that the temper- ance people of this province, ir themselves by the thousands to try to get rid of the. Ferguson govern. ment. They charge"Premier Fet- guson with breaking "his. pledged word. He promised that the will of the people should prevail in regard to the O. T. A. and then did not' keep his promise. The people Bo longer have faith in him. They feel that he was pledged to make concessions to the liguor in- terests and did not dare refuse. Mr. Ferguson may rally his party followers. They may desert the cause of temperance and break their pledges as Mr. broke his, but it will be a surprise if they do. This is not a political question but a moral one in which every home in. this. province is $2.00 | vitally interested. The temperance people of the Province seem to be aroused, now, a8 they never were before, and they are pledging themselves to vote only for candidates, who are pledged to Prohibition. These will not in- clude Premier Ferguson or those who- supported his efforts to wreck the O. T. A. -------------- HOME 'AND SCHOOL CLUBS. The St. Thomas Times-Journal in discussing this organization says the purpose is to make the schools more efficient. Parents, the journal re- marks, are waking up to the fact that the school has Jurisdiction over their children for seven hours in the day for five days in' the week, afd that that jurisdiction is exercis- ed during the most formative period of 'the child's life. Parents are dis- covering the mistake of leaving this period almost entirely at the disposal of the teacher. In all fairness they are asking what is going on and are frying to keep intimately in touch with the activities of the school Bo 'that they may be on hand early ia the way of encouraging or abolish- ing influences as they prove to be good or bad. : This association in no way desires ta be in any degree impertinently in- quisitorial, Its whole aim is to be 'constructively engaged in a study of the child's welfare. The aim is to ibe the teacher's friend and & guard to the life of the child. Only good can come from such an association. " While our schools bear favorable comparison with the best in the world, there is room for im- provement. On the other hand, par- ents admit that parental duties may bé more efficiently discharged. TO MAKE AN EXPERIMENT. LA new industry for Ontario, the annual output of which in the course of a few years is expected to reach $3,000,000, is foreshadowed in the experimental fur farm, for which the Ontario legislature will be asked to provide funds. ;~ The fur farm will be located at Balsam Lake, Victoria county, It is of an- experimental 'nature, and will be put into actual operation as soon as the funds are available. Already the province owns 100 acres along the shore of the lake, and it is esti- mated that $25,000 or less will erect the necessary buildings for the staff and for the furry animals to be rais- ©d there, fence the property, and provide the needed equipment. Dr. R. G. Law, son of the late Prof. Law, of Toronto University, will be in charge of the farm. The purpose of the farm is to show that fur bearing animals can be bred and raised just as cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, 'and silver foxes Are now farmed. On the experi- mental farm will be beaver, otter, fox, fisher mink, martth, muskrat and possibly other varieties. It is boped that farmers will carry on as @ side line and raise domesticated animals for their furs." May ft 'work out to the satisfaction of its pro- moters. Now, many stretches of walks that were left, uncleaned for a day are quickly shovelled to the great satisfaction of pedestrians. Yes, the farmers are also rejofec- ing over the big order received by Kingston's locomotive works. Why? Well because increased population in the city. means that more egEs; buttef, potatoes and other farm pro- duce will be consumed here this year. With the coal miners back on the job, the locomotive works here get- ting ready to operate at full e¢apacity and the winter drawing on to its close, is there not good reason for a little rejoicing here?
