The Whig's Classified Page Is a Public F rum and a True Market Place BLL TELEPHONE IN USE HALF A CENTURY Anniversary Will Be Celebrat= ed on March 10--Inter- esting Local History. In view of the fact that on March 4 the Bell Telephone Company will ABs obrate the fiftieth -anniversary of "is birth it is interesting to note the advances which have been made by the company $n Kingston, As far as ie Whig can learn, the B elephohie was first introduced in ingston in, the late seventies, A ife-long resident of Kingston, when speaking to a representative of The Whig, stated that he could well remember when the first phone was installed. The first telephone ex- change was locatad on Ontario street, next to the Frontenac Hotel. For years the' company remained there. The first manager was a man ££ name of Freeman, and he was owed by A. T. Smith, whe at the pjresent time is located in Toronto. Henry Snelling was the local mana- ger for years, and was in charge of the local office when the company _moved to the present bullding now oe d by the exchange on Clar- affine e re are many subscribers at the present time who have been constant users for over forty years. The Ca- nadian National Railway office and ' telegraph offices have retained the same numbers, namely 99 and 1, dyring all these years. The two local spapers have never changed r numbers, Standard business be 29, and editorial department , and British Whig, business office, 243. The Whig editorial department was 229 up until a few years ago, when & change was made. The firm of A. Chown & Co. has been a sub- scriber for over forty years and have had the same number, 71. Dr. A. P, Chown, druggist, Prin- cess street, tells The Whig that he h ad the same number for over tol years The following is a list of some of the old established firms which have had telephones for many years, and in most cases have retained the same number: Court Heuse, 138; L. T. est, 69; "Bibby Company, 142; th's coal, 133; Campbell Bros. 9; Canadian Pacific Railway, 50; pH. Carnoviky, 21; R. J. Carson, + Henderson's Grocery, 4; Police tation, 19; City 'Clerk, 16; City Engineer, 92; W. G. Craig & Co., 210; R. Crawford & Co., 9; Craw- 26; Crothers Com- Customs Examining ehouse, 64; Dominfon Textile, Miott Bros., 35; Fenwick Henry; ; Hon. William Harty, 7; Ua- . 's Carriage, 1562; -Lockett's Shoe Btore, 24; John McKay Hide Warehouse, 657; Parkhill's, 96; Penitentiary, 186; W. P. Peters, 51; James Reddan & Co., 20; Rees Bros., 60, and James Reid, 147. It would be very interesting to ow 'who was the first subscriber , Kingston, © Although the present & management have made an in- "véstigation, the records at the local office do not dntd back that far. The company would certainly appreciate the above information. 5 The telephone was invented by Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, assisted by Thomas Wateon, in Boston, where had made final experiments + their wonderful device. The Ida of the telephone, as Bell said, Waa conceived in Brantford, Ont, al- though actually born in Boston. 4" The records show that the first ds to be spoken over the pu.one urfed when Dr. Alexander Gra- ham Bell spoke to his .assobiate, Watson, from an adjoining room and sald: "Myr. Watson, come here, I want you." Ea The number of subscribers in _ Mngston. has increased from a few tundred until at the present time there are 4,780.
