Every move that the Kingston junior hockey team has made this winter has been wiatohed with undyi interest and lot of King- Blo people who learned the final #ccre ofthe game last night that put the team out of the race for the Canadian championship. However, there was none to lay blame on the team for this or that. There was none to say a harsh word or to say anything but the best for the plucky fight the boys made. That is real following. When a team {is |] winning right through it's easy enough for them to have whole- hearted support and sympathy but the test comes when they fail. The Kingston team can be assured that they had the real thing right along in support and sympathy for when they finally fell, they were shower ed with praise for what good they had accomplished. Tt was a bitter pill for the fans back home but not more bitter, no doubt, than to fhe boys themselves. No man can do more than that, As for the fans, it is rather heart: breaking for them. They had set their hearts on the juniors coming through and watched their progress with the pride of a parent watch- ing a som or daughter accomplish something great. Reverse to the team meant reverse to them. Great would have. been their rejoicing if Ringston had won the Canadian championship but to their credit, the Kingston fans must be congratu- lated upon the splendid way they have taken the defeat. ' They have accepted it gracefully and without the least bitterness and they have shown a great sporting spirit, the real kind, in taking the reverse as they did. A Wonderful Record. The Kingston team has madé a wonderful record for the season and even bereft of the title, they can lay claim to having accomplished great things in the hockey world. From the time they started out in January against Brockville, they have blazed the path before them and they have brought credit to themselves as hoc- key players and as gentlemen on and oft the ice. And. if they have done that, they have certainly accomplish- ed more than all the championships for the next ten years. From the time they left the Brockville group, then to Trenton, to Markham, tg Parkdale, Owen Sound, North Bay, Sons of Ireland, Fort William and then Calgary, the local players have played the game as they saw it with credit to everybody and everything connected with them. They have dcne well and Kingston is proud of them. They- hold as high places among the fans of the.city they re- presented as if they had brought all the junior hockey teams in the world at their feet. They went down trying and trying hard and no praise is too high for these boys, who are to-day not criticized or made little of because they lost out finally but who are being given every credit for what they have done. And now let us not offer alibis but let us whole-heartedly congratulate the victors, the Calgary Canadians end clap them off the back for what they have done. They are a great team. If they had not been, they never would have beaten Kingston. They deserve great credit for ¢¥m- ing back inthe two last games the way they did and they must be a team of real grit and courage to have played as they did. While dis- appointed and perhaps a little down- cast over the result, Kingston fans salute Calgary Canadians as the jun- for champions and offer them the congratulations of a beaten but real sporting body. 8t. Francis Xavier Take Case to Law Montreal, March 26--A monkey wrench was thrown into the peace- ful machinéry of the amateur hock- ey convention here when a bailiff from the Superior court served a writ upon President Finch, of the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association, cn behalf of the St. Francois Xavier Club of this city, who are still claim- ants for the right to playoff for the Allan Cup as representing the Proy- ince of Quebec. The writ was a demand that con- sideration be given at once to a pro- test filed by St. Francois Xavier on March 26, against the methods used in the playoff and against the right of the Sons of Ireland to enter the Quebec series which St. Francois Xivier won. Which action seems to imply that St. Francois Xavier ex- pects that the entire playoff series is to be thrown out as irregular. The lawyers in the case for St. Francois are Cormier and Forget, ond their noticed" gives Presiden: Finch twenty-four hours in which to reply or be brought before the courts. What the outcome of the case will be is difficult to say, but it has creat- ed a tremendous, if subdued, excite- ment among the amateur hockey de- legates from all over the' country, mbled here. ; Th f » A [ Feterun oon rs | Many a time the average golfer faces a pitch shot over a deep sand 5 f £ fi b and souls! The youngsters from the West defeated a grand hockey {team and a great bunch of sports and when they did that they accom- | plished no mean feat. Let us say the better team won and offer no alibis. | m------ . It's all over, but Kingston hocke , Tha s y fans are more n pleased with the | splendid showing of the little band of hockeyists that have brought Kings- | ton into the hockey limelight. Every player on the team is deserving of |the greatest praise and every one is certainly getting it in Kingston. | Thank goodness that the Limestone City is.a sporting place and the fans |can accept defeat with smiles on their faces. Hats)bff to the men of the | West for their glorious victory and to the wearers of the prominent "K* {for their splendid showing, both in hockey and in sportsmanship. Every place in the.city one went where men were collected, the main jtopc of conversation for the 'past month has been hockey and to-day it was going stronger than ever. Local hockey fans were disappointed to say the least, but they are praising the Kingston team. And for some time to come the locals' wonderful crusade 'will be talked about and pon- dered over. And once again Kingston provided the thrillér for the fans at home by staging the habitual last-period rally. Even with the score 3-0. in Calgary's favor at the end of the second period, local fans were confident that Kingston would at least tie the count and when they hung up two | counters in less than ten minutes of play, things looked bright. Both [teams workéd like maniacs in the dying minutes of the game and gave the fans at the game something to see besides the uniforms. Perhaps the most dis appointed persons in the city were the lady hockey fans. The Kingston team had many fair supporters who kept the telephone lines hot enquiring after the scoreqand exclamations that were heard over the phones clearly proved how they felt about the defat. "w Th! Kingston team, when they arrive home, will receive as great a reception from the sporting element of this city as they would if they {had won the Thampionship. The O.H.A. champions have had a very | strenuous campaign and in nearly every game of the semi-finals and [finals were forced to give their last ounce of energy to keep in the race. | The strain was very hard on the players and the loss of the championship "If you fail once, try again," is the old motto, and | was a great set-back. Ringston will be heard from again next season. | ----p---- but there is one especially that is receiving many bouquets, and he certainly deserves them. "Bill' Taugher, the "kid hemp-guardian," has stood up under .many heavy barrages.with the Kingston team this season and although the work of a goal-tender is not as strenuous as the other players, it's the little fellow in fromt of ¢he nets who has the mental strain. Perhaps there are better junior goal-tenders in Canada than Taugher, but we're. from Missouri. Not only are the players deserving of great praise, but the men who have looked after the locals should get a big share of the credit. James T. Sutherland, Coach Gelley, Trainer "Jack" Powell and Bd Hartrick were important cogs in the great machine and are men who will receive many congratulations on their work. "Buster" Hartley marked another notch on his sun and whistled in the first goal for Kingston on a sizzling hot delivery. Hartley has earned a great reputation #8 a sharp-shooter this season and the goal-tender of every team Kingston has faced knows from experience that "Buster" bandles a mean shot. And in closing we o jce again say, all honor to the Calgary Canadians, conquerors of the prides of Kingston, the birthplace and undisputed throne of hockey. : mam easiest for him to play. All star players are not nearly as expert as Jock when it comes to playing pitch shots, but nevertheless all golfers among the top ranks are extremely accurate with a mashie or mashie-niblick, hE £1 A "DODD'S GETS BIG OFFER.
