AA, The Editor Hears That the good roads system has opened up the lovely hilly country | north of Loughboro Lake and daily | motorists find their way to this land of woods and lakes where just now the country lying along the Lake Ontario is the backward part of the county and the region to the north a week or tem days ahead of us as far as vegetation is concerned. The maples are deep red or flame color, in the swamps the osier dogwood, and the pussy willows are in blossom and beyond Buck Lake a hillside is golden with the blossoms of the dirca palustria, which is, we are told by a Kingston botanist, , the name for the shrub commonly called moosewood from its exceedingly tough and stringy bark used by the Indians and early settlers to tie up bundles of various kinds. Blood root shelters within its unfolding leaves at the edge of the woods and white saxifrage, called by some of us "London -Pride," clings to the rocky ledges. In tte woods, the first trillilums are opening their trinity of white petals, and by the roadside the fiddle heads of the big ferns are seen. A blue bird flashes by, meadow larks are flying across the meadows and on the road, pick- ing up his dinner, may now and then be seen a horned lark with his crest and black collar. He will leave us soon and perhaps go as far as the Arctic Circle before he comes back next spring. He keeps a sharp look- out, as well he may, for the splendid goshawk, who was seen by a party of Kingston motorists, perched on a fence post. Real spring has come in the lake region of Frontenac. That still another phase of the work of the Kingston Red Cross is the caring in various ways from the men who still receive treatment at the Hotel Dieu and the Kingston General Hospital. They too are re- membered at Christmas and during the summer, kind friends take them for drives and picnics in their cars and last summer they shared in the delightful trip given by Mr. J. M. Campbell to the patients and staff of Mowat Hospital when a steamer took a happy party to an island be- low Gananoque for a picnic tea. That a host of friends congratu- lated the girls who received diplo- mas and honors from the Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday evening, The long training is over and although nearly every nurse will tell you she enjoyed it, it is a time of anxiety and hard work. That the gardeners are hard at work on these finé spring days and every evening a tour of Kingston gardens would find the several mem- bers of the family digging, raking and seeding. We will look for really beautiful gardens this summer. That a feeling of satisfaction was felt throughout the empire as the news flashed that the general strike was called off. The "right little, tight little island" is the heart of the great empire on which the sun never sets, and while the confident opinion that "they will settle it somehow" was expressed on every hand, it was with real joy that Canadians heard that the first steps towards settle- ment were taken.
