(Copyright, 1918, by ihe McClure Newspaper Syndicate). My surprise at Mr, Phillips' revela- Is tion concerning Evelyn's affection |' for Arthur was nothing compared | with that which I experienced a few | evenings later at Mr. Henderson's, | when I overheard a conversation be- tween Miss Phillips and Harry Pen- dleton, We were Mr, Henderson's guests for the evening, Harry having suc- ceeded in his plan to have Evelyn invited without her father. It was a merry little group which sat down to dinner and afterwards we were held together for a time by our com- mon Interest in topics under discus- sion. But as the evening wore on we broke into twos and threes. Mr. Tomlinson, by some unhappy circum- stance, became my entertainer. That describes it exactly. Mr. Tomlinson did not believe in permitting his companions to appropriate any more of the conversation than an occas- ional monosyllable question. Lulled by his monotonous voice 1 was about to doze in a secluded cor- ner of the great conservatory of the Henderson mansion when Mrs. Tom- linson buzzed up with a command from Mr. Henderson, whereupon Mr. Tomlinson hurried to obey, leaving me alone for 'a moment with his spouse. But the good womén's curiosity soon got the better of her. It was imperative for her to know why her husband had been summon- ed into the August Presence, and it was not long before she found an ex- cuse to follow Mr. Tomlinson. I was not sorry, Mr. Tomlinson always got on my nerves, and his wife irritated me even more severe- ly. So when they were both gone I laid my head against the back of my chair and closéd my eyes in blissful solitude. I must have fallen into a doze just light enough to be rsstful and yet not deep enough to render me unconscious of the noises about me, At first these sounds were confined to the distant hum of voices or to the low music which floated out to me from the drawing room, but presently I was dimly conscious of other tones. Faint- ly at first and then more acutely I realized that Harry Pendleton was speaking within a few feet of where I was seated. I became aware also that he had a companion who was permit- ting him to do most of the talking. An occasional word which I heard told me that the companion was Evelyn Phillips. They were discussing some person whom Harry apparently admired very greatly, but whose name had not been uttered. The thought of eavesdrop- ping did not occur to me, because at first I was almost asleep and later I was too busy looking for an avenue of escape to think of making my pre- sence known. "I do not know why I am telling you this," Harry was saying. "A man naturally keeps such things to himself, but there is something in the air to-night which just compels me to talk about it. Besides, this thing of continually repressing my emotions is getting the better of me. I cannot atand it much longer. Sometimes I have thought that I would just dis- appear, as 1 used to do when matters didn't suit me. Then more mature reflection has told me that I should stay and face the storm, if a storm, indeed, is to break. One thing is cer- | tain, however. This cannot go on | forever." Evelyn made no reply immediately. {I could not see her face, but I could sense that she, too, was under a heavy strain. "Does she know how you feel to- ward her?' '1 cannot tell. At times I think she suspects I love her and at other times she is 80 unaffected in her atti- tude toward 'me that it is hard to realize that she can think anything of the sort." A longer silence, during which I could hear both of them breathing close to what had now become my hiding place. "I assume, from what you say, that there is some reason why you cannot speak freely to her of your love, Am I right?" "Yes, there is a reason. Some would consider it a good and sufficient reason, and some would not. ;I am in doubt. Sometimes I think that no- thing in this world sh ted to keep two each other apart. pelled to face tie fact that certain standards have been set up by so- ciety and that our civilization compels us to recognize those standards or be- came outcasts." "Is it so serious as that?" It was Evelyn's voice and I detected the sur- prise in her tome. If she ever had suspected that Harry was leading up to a proposal his last words wiped that impression from her mind. "It is quite that serious." "She is married?" "Yes." A prolonged silence Then rustle of Evelyn's garments. "I fear 1 cannot help you, unless : "Yes," said Harry eagerly, "Unless it is Roxane Pembroke!" "It is she!" cried Harry. "And you can and will help me?" Evelyn's vpice was liard as steel when. she replied. "Yes, it may be that I can. But we must not talk of it further here. Let me think. 1 will send for you later." the unless, (Tao, be Continued.) TO BRING DOWN PRICES, North Bay Town Coundil Urges Dras- tic Measures. Rubbers cost practically the same as before the war. A good pair of shoes runs away with as much money as five to ten pairs of equally good rubbers. Yet one of these pairs of rubbers, worn when needed, will make a pair of shoes last half as long again--perhaps twice as long-- for nothing destroys shoe-leather like get- ting wet. So the money spent in rubbers is returned several times over in the saving of shoes alone, and again in 'the prevention of colds and worse, with the attendant expense and danger. Beyond these personal advantages, wearing rub- bers is a patriotic duty. Leather is growing scarcer, while its need for the soldiers is as great cr greater than ever. Every pair of shoes we save, by releasing that much leather, helps a bit toward winning the war. It will be an easy matter for you to find what you want in our stock.
