GIVEN A SHOCK AND ALMOST CAUSED DESTRUC. TION OF PAVILION At Lake Ontario Park&-Leaves and Brushwood Caught Fire and Made Rapid Progress--itockweod Hos. pital Staff Saved Building. The Street Railway Company's paviiicn at Lake Ontario Park came within an ace of being destroyed by {ire on Tuesday afternoon. A small boy, with a bon fire, was respcusible for a lot of excitement, ana tae good work' of some of the staff at Rockwood Hospital saved the day. Fire got within forty feet of the payiiion. A high wind prevailed at the time, and it was indeed a close {call for the building. it appears that the boy, who was louting "around the park, started a fire down near the water. He went away for a short time, and in his ab- sence the wind carried some of the sparks to a pie of leaves on the bank. Fanned by the wind, it was but a few minutes before the fire commenced to spread, burning leaves, brushwood and everything else in its path, and making for the pavilion at a rapid raté. The lad on coming back was shocked to find the condition of affairs, but had presence of mind to give an alarm. Hospital hurried to the scene with a no time in checking the blaze, but not before it got within forty feet of the pavilion. H. C. Niekle, superintendent of the street railway company, was notified, and he rushed to the park with some of his staff, and assisted in extin- #ishing the fire. One of the park trees had to be cut dewh to stay the progress of the fire. INCREASE OF PRODUCTION APPEAL WH: BE MADE AT A MASS MEETING IN THE CITY. Date For Meeting Will be Arranged in Course of Few Days--~General Committee to-Meet Representative of Ontario Department of Agricul- ture. The Greater Productien Movement is catching on in Kingston in great style. All the committees are down to work, and with the combined effort of every citizen, Kingston's record in this. country-wide campaign should be a creditable one. A meeting of the executive ofthe Greater Production Committee was 'held on Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in the mayor's office at the City Hill. In the absence of Mayo: Hughes, the chair was occupied by Ald. George C. Wright, and also pre- serit were: Robert Meek, R. J. Rod- ger, W. H. Macnee, James Minnes and General Secretary John Nicolle. It was decided to have a general meeting of the Greater Production Committee in the Board of Trade five o'clock for the purpose of meeting J.5.Asselstine D.0.S & Registered Optometrist. i 842 King Street i THE BUSY OPTICAL | STORE. Mr. Sirrett, the representative of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, in this district, and to talk over ways and means for the carrying on of the work. Mr. Sirrett's views on the matter are desired, as he will play an important part in the campaign. His office is now being removed from Sydenham to this city, and it will be the centre for évery move along lines of agriculture. The question of holding a public meeting for a general appeal for. in- creased production was also discuss- ed, and the date of the meeting will likely be arranged for at the meeting on Friday afternoon. Just recently a blz mass meeting of the citizens was held in Massey Hall, Toronto, when prominent speakers dealt with the guestion. In every city and town in Canada, and also across the bord- ef the cry is for increased production. Kingston is not the only place that is taking this 'progressive step. The call is being made in every place. . The executive also arranged for a division of the money to be appro- priated by each committee. ~The Whig was informed on Wed- nesday morning that many applica- tions had been received for land to work, and that a number of transfers would be made at once, A On Wednesday afternoon id. "POSED A FINE $200 AND COSTS James Dean Secured Whiskey in Cape Vincent Bat Drank Some on Wolfe Island--Arrested For Beng | Intoxicated. a: 4 | Canada in Flanders James Dean suffered quite a shock in Police Court on Wednesday morn- ing, when Magistrate Farrell imposed a fine of $200 and costs, or one month, for violating the Temperance Act. He admitted the offence, told the Magistrate he was sorry, and was looking for leniency. Under the new liquor laws, however, the Magistrate has no alternative but to impose a fine. His Worship cannot issue pass- es like in the old days. Every of- fénder has to take his medicine. Dean was not well posted on the new law, however, and thus he was dis- appointed, and left the court room convinced that 'it was a cruel ola world he was living in, Dean called at the police station on Tuesday morning. He had heard that his wife hall made a complaint about him beating her, and wanted to give himself up. There was: no chargefpgainst him at that time, and he"was'told to go away. Later Con- sfables Arniel and Mullinger found fm in an intoxicated condition, and jaced him under arrest. # "After Dean had told his story, the Magistrate was not quite sure as to jusg how many times the accused had"broken the temperance laws, but after looking up the blue book on the matter, he charged him with having Hquor in a place other than his own dwelling place, and he pleaded guilty, His story was that he Bought a bottle of liquor at an hotel in Cape Vincent on Monday. He drank the most of it while at the Cape, and then came over.to Wolfe Island. He stayed at an hotel on the Island on Monday night, and on Tuesday morning, he had enough left in the bottle for a good "eye-opener", Instéad of being an "openier" it put the closure on Dean, for he was un- able to look after his wife and thus his 'arrest. x Constable Arnjel told Dean that his wife had been complaining about his having assaulted her and the con- stable told him if he wanted to fight he had better sign up and fight the Germans. - Evidently this was not the kind of fighting he wanted. > 5 Weather Notes. The eaktern disturbance is dispers- ing over the Maritime Provinces and another of lesser intensity is moving across the Great Lakes. The tem- perature is now rising in Ontario but remains low in Quebec and eastern Canada. : Rummage Sale.
