try and that in pursuing its steady unvaried course through good report and ill report little concern ha9 been manifested to square its opinions with a view to obtaining the support of any party we have advocated not this administration or that party and in more than one instance we have come in contact with the late administration of this province but wo have advocated british rule in opposition to yankee and democratic influence british constitutional liberty opposed to the levelling system of a certain party in this country this has been our creed aud if in the exercise of it we have thought fit to animadvert on the unconstitntional concessions mado to the faction in lower canada it is not that we require such means of support as spring from attacks on the constituted authorities of the excellent intentions of sir james kempt we have not a doubt but we say that surrendering without nepessity an undoubted prerogative of the crown however unimportant some may esteem it is not exactly the way to preserve the constitution we say surrendering with out necessity for why was not the parlia ment dissolved and why was there not a new election of a speaker then the go vernors approval of the choice of the house would have saved the crown its undoubt ed right would sufficiently conciliate the house on that point and prevent the re grets of all well wishers of their king and country as it is the former election is declared valid notwithstanding lord dal- housies rejection of the speaker standing on record thatsir james kempt should thank the house of assembly for their promises to further the views ofhis government how ever little reason he might have to place much reliance on such promises so far from cavilling at we highly approve we confess however it is not quite so clear to us that he should have expressed his high satisfaction at the address in which his predecessors administration was termed illegal and tyrannical the rev john cruickshank a m has arrived in town from scotland to conduct r a seminary for classical and general educa tion in this place he comes here we un derstand highly recommended ami from all that we have learned of him we station of difficulty where dissension prevailed among almost all classes to one of quietness and general harmony we have received the three first num bers of the irish vinoicator a paper pub lished author of the canadian campaign the name and actions of tecum- seli must be familiar to every in habitant of canada and a desire to see the memory of so distinguished and ex traordinary a man perpetuated by any writer however humble must be a sen timent coequal with the admiration so universally excited during his enterpri sing career not less among his enemies than among his allies and his friends the author of this epic poem which is illustrated by copious notes is himself a canadian and has often combated at the side of tecumseh to whom he was more immediately known on that memorable day which deprived nature of one of her brightest though rudest gems and the nearly now exterminat ed indian tribes of a leader devoted to their interests and their liberties he beheld the remains of that glorious chieftain mangled and disfigured even as he has described them scarcely an officer of the division on that untoward occasion failed to pay the just tribute of regret to his memory and but few there were who did not lose sight of their own personal feelings in the depth and sincerity of their grief for the noble and unfortunate tecumseh the principal and original view of the author in composing his poem was to rescue the name of this truly great man from the unmerited oblivion to which it had been consigned buta- ware of the difficulty under which as an unknown writer he labours in giving his work all necessary publicity he has adopted the suggestions of numerous li terary friends to print the volume by subscription among naval and military men he trusts moreover that by his own countrymen some encouragement will be afforded not simply in his cha racter of poet the first of his native soil who has adventured on the dangerous shoals ol verse but also in that of the historian the panegyrist of him who is now no more but whose name and whose memory there can be few cana dians unwilling to see transmitted to posterity the poem opens with a description of the action on lake erie where the gallant and unfortunate barclay after essaying all that human courage and re solutions could attain was compelled to strike to a superior enemy and on this leading feature the several other incidents of the poem are made to hang the third canto contains the cele brated speech made by tecumseh in the council of chiefs convened by ge neral procter when after the capture of the little squadron he proposed re treating from amherstburgto the mora vian village captain barclay to whom in com mon with the other officers of the right division the poem is inscribed has been pleased to express his entire approbation of the work in terms the most satisfactory and gratifying to the author it remains foi his own coun trymen to decide how far successful he has beim in delineating the scenery of the land and the habits occupations and warlike exercises of the natives should any palpable omissions or errors be noticed it must be recollect ed in extenuation that the poem has been composed almost whohvfrotn me mory and that fourteen years have e- lapsed since the author last beheld the wild scenery ofhis native clime the price of the poem in boards printed on
