to the press i have read in the montreal herald of the 8th instant a very interesting account copied i presume from the montreal goxetle of the life and character of mr richardson which i beg leave strongly to recommend to the perusal of the public in confirmation of my sentiments and opioionv with respect to that eminent individual there are however some expressions and facts con tained in this additional tribute to mrrich- ardon merit both as a man aod a citi zen which coincide so closely with the view made use of by myself that i think it pro per to declare that i know nothing of the source whence the tribute in question ema nates aod that i was not aware of its ex istence uutil after i had as already stated boot the produce of my own feeble efforts to the press it is with infinite satisfaction however that i discover iu the article in question a spirit congenial with my own that there are many such i firmly believe let us combine and strengthen ourselves in our eodeavours to do justico to the memo ry of a great and good man of whose life june 10th from the u c herald synod op canada a meeting of the minister in commu nion with the church of scotland in this aud the neighbouring province together with elders from their several sessioos was held here on tuesday last after prayer a jd mature deliberation they formed them selves into a synod to be called the continued their sittings by cuccessive adjournments from tuesday untill a late bouron monday evening and all their proceedings were conducted with the utmost unanimity we are enabled to give a brief outline to the business which engaged the synod a memorial was proposed to the general assembly of the church of scotland aod signed by all the members informing that venerable body of the formation of the sy nod and soliciting their countenance and assistance a petition of the king was also agreed io urgiog the claims of the synod to a share of the clergy reserves in virtue of their connection with the parent church and an address to his excellency the lieu tenant governor was also prepared aod signed a case of dispute in st gabriels street and character in every respect we have all i montreal was brought before the synod by just cause to be proud i shall only add hope that whether mr richardsons mo nument is destined to be a public or private one the subscription list will not be confin ed to montreal for i know thai io both provinces there are many who eagerly de- sirn to contribute to a design sanctioned by the general approbation of the public a the canada trade actim another part of our paper we lay bclbre our readers a new page of the attempts to apply the doctrines of free trade and a proof of the attention which is bes towed on colonial affairs when theories are to lc tested they must be so extensively experimented as to allow the full play of the complex and often temporarily oppo sed interests of the community the contracted and selfish spirit of the united states policy has lor many years been an obstacle to this but it begins to create dissatisfaction in the union itself and it is to be hoped that the chinese wall of their tanff will at length give way under a more liberal and less jealous administration with a free and unrestricted intercourse between great britain and the united stated the golden stream of commerce would leave its rich pro fessing the doctrine discipline and jrovcrn ment of the church of scotland was brought before the synod and after serious consid eration it was resolved that while the synod recognised it as an object highly desirable that the presbyterians of canada who are agreed in doctrine discipline aod govern ment with the church of scotland should be united io one ecclesiastical body they considered it inexpedient to proceed to the consideration or formation of a connexion with any presbyterian ministers not in communion with the church of scotland until they should obtain farther informa tion they appointed a committee to col lect information on this subject and to re port to the next meeting of synod the ministers were enjoined to draw up a report of the state of religion in their re spective congregations and neighbour hoods for the information of the synod a home missionary society was formed to be under the direction ofthe synod and it was recommended to the several pres
