DRYDEN, ONTARIO, FEBRUARY 24th, 1933. ! : No. 8. THE COLUMNIST |MUSHING I have very studiously avoided the discussion of party polities, in anything 1 write, because surely this is wise. And further- OVER NORTHERN ONTARIO Gerard Von Dochterman who more, this paper reaching into started out from Halifax eariy far flung places, I have tried to be general rather than local, in| my ideas. This week I am deviating] slightly from my policy, because I deem it my duty to awaken the people of this constituency to a danger, that is imminent, but might yet be combated. An: for fear of being misplaced and misjudged, I hasten to say that I have no party bias in what I write. I am trying to speak as a good local citizen, alive to dan ger, and having the medium of expression, through this column. And naturallny you ask, "What's all the fuss?" Well, during the past few weeks, items of news have shown that the Ontario Government has under consideration lessening the number of seats in the Legis- lature. And I have no hesitation in taking off my hat to the Government, because we assured- ly are over-governed. Usually any Government, mak- ing seat changes is eriticized by the Opposition, and the action contemplated, is frequently eall- ed Gerrymander, and Gerryman-| der is a term of reproach. But I see no sign of anything wrong, as several apparently safe Conservative seats, are go- ing to be wiped out. I believe the Cabinet, or Caucus is sincere- ly motivated towards economy. And if Rep., by Pop., be follow- ed, we of this Western end of] the Province, have little chance] of argument. | Nor do I see that the Govern-| ment has any considered scheme | of making gain or loss in this] Western end. I impugn no one.| I merely see a not fully consid- ered plan of things, born of an idea sincerely started for econo- my. my argument not on fact, but upon rumours, although these rumours seem to be founded up- on authority. Well, supposing what we hear| is true, how does it effeet us? It means that our Provincial] member will have the same terri- tory to cover as our Federal member, all the Rainy River country, all the Kenora Distriet, as doubtless, Sioux Lookout, will be swung somewhere else. There is no equal comparison between the duty details of the two representatives. The Feder-| al member outside of the local] personal touch, necessary to] friendship, gratitude and Te-| election, concerns himself only | with tariffs, inflation, commun-| ism, hours of labour, ete, ete The local member has to consid- er roads and cow-paths, school grants and fairs, and all the little details of a much harassed and in turn harassing country- side. shai The Federal member gets $4.- 000.00 less 10%, the Provincial member $2,000.00 also less 10% or half the bigger man's salary. The Federal member can take a good deal of holiday, the Pro- vineial chap must never sleep. with even his present territory. Surely, I have said enough with- out being tiresome to prove that if rumour be true, it is impos- sible for any man, unless very rich, to properly serve provin- { and in September with a partner on a hitch hiking tour arrived in Dryden Monday. Dochterman however gave up the walking since snowfall has been travelling by dog team alone, his partner preferring to continue to hike to Vancouver where they hope to land sometime in April Dochterman left lay morning at 10 am. and cut straight across country arriving in Dryden at 4 p.m. During this time he allowed a good stop for dinner at noon. He says he has never yet had to sleep out, and believes being a elever musician had aided him in being hospit- ably received at the various section houses and other places along the way. MEETS WITH ACCIDENT Mr. Joe Ernewein met with a very painful accident while at his work in 'the Mill Saturday morning. He was rushed to the Hospital where he received good attention from Dr. Morison. His left thumb is seriously injured | but it is hoped amputation will not be necessary. cially such an electoral area as Rainy River and Kenora. We have five newspapers in the constituency that rumour | contemplates, The Miner & News, Kenora; The Northern Observer, Sioux Lookout; The Times, Fort Frances; The Gazette, Rainy River; and The Observer, Dry- den. Are they going to sit still or not? I may be barking up a gum tree. If so, my bark will pass | harmlessly into the ether. But I imagine that a far see- ing people, will watch out for the dangers of the imaginary. Supposing there is an element of actuality in the proposal that I pre-suppose, is it to the inter- est of our sitting member, or any potential member, to let anything slide on greased skids? Is it not a time for watchful ness and action? Anyhow, I am most serious in what IT have written, with no personal motive. I used to dream that my oratory would bring Sir Oliver Mowat, or Sir James Whitney, out of their portrait frames in the Ontario Parliament Buildings, but I have given up that idea long ago. I am econ- tent now to be known as one of the District's best bridge play- ers, or its unluckiest curler. But I do feel for our next Provincial member. Supposing I have made a case, supposing you think as I do, why not write to Premier Henry, good honest shooter, that he is, telling him a thing or two, as you think them? And do it at once! There are other Constituencies, that ' could be more reasonably mutilated than ours.
