Geological investigations indicate that this industry is but in its infancy, and that its vast stores of wealth have as yet been scarcely more than touched. The economic development of Can- ada has been retarded by the exist- ence of so-called "barren areas" De- tween the more highly-developed sec- tions. With the instinct of the pioneer Canada's early settlers sought out those sections which promised to yieid the most speedy returns, Many of the intervening areas were considered use- less and were left untouched, making a listinet cleavage between East- ern and Western Canada, with the re- sult that transportation and the dis- Tt is significant that these areas which : were formerly considered valueless, are proving to be invaluable. Apart from the value of the mineral wealth, the settlement of these intervening areas is of profound importance in the | consolidation of Canada. It is not in-, conceivable that this area will some day be the centre of an industrial district comparable to the thickly settl- ed industrial sections of the United States. It is a recognition of the vital place which mining has in Canada's develop- ment that has led the Financial Post to issue the National Mining Number.
