Premier Hertzog, addressing the national assembly, opposed secession of the Union of South Africa from the British empire. The Premier's speech was regarded as being an important contribution to the discussion of pos- sible secession which has been under way from time to time throughout the country. Mr Hertzog said that person- ally he thought secession would be a national disaster if it was imposed by one section, either British or Dutch, imposing its will on the other. LEWIS THINKS OTTAWA, April 29.--A. J. Lewis, progressive, Swift Current, broke some new ground in suggesting taxation. Mr Lewis advocated a tax on bachelors. The Prime Minister, he thought was setting a bad example. He wanted = tax op hockey tickets, increase in duty on cigars, a luxury tax, radio equip-~ ment tax and thought there were too many government fmotor cars. Lewis spoke in the continued debate in the budget. NEW BEER TO PAY OTTAWA, April 28.--Beer which is to be sold in Ontario will be subject to the Federal Excise Tax of twelve and a half cents a gallon. Two per cent Beer has never been taxed by the Department of Customs. OTTAWA, April 28.--The new 4.4. beer which Premier Ferguson intimat- es will go on sale in Ontario around May 15, will, in the opinion of Ottawa Breweries, cost as much, if not more, than beer of greater alcoholic strength now being sold in the Province of Que- bee, providing the rumored Provin- cial tax of ten cents a gallon is im- posed in addition to the Federal Gov- ernment tax of 12% cents a gallon. The beverage, it is thought will likely be from 15 to 20 cents a pint. RSE ITO Er {TSO we Sil Rs Special TO In its ruiing cise makes no mention as to whether, beer is intoxicating.
