Dryden, Ontario RICH VOUTH GETS "LIFE." MASON. Mich., March 11.--Arthur Rich, son of a w calt thy Battle Creek manufacturer, has been found guilty of criminally assaulting Louise King, 20-year-old co-ed. and has been 'sen- tenced to life imprisonment the full penalty under the Michigan stae law. The assaul occurred on the golf links near here last year when Rich, the girl said, luerd her from an automobile to a lonely spot on the pretext of showing her where he made a hole-in-1 in golf the previous day. She testified he struck her, breaking her jaw, and as- saulted h=r. Rich's defence was that the girl had become intoxicated, and suffered injury when she bumped her head zgainst the side of the auto. The O.A.C. Field Husbandry Department has bgen" the greatest factor in the hardy Alfalfa propaganda of Ontario: Co-operative experiments have been conducted with varieties of Alfalfa for twenty-six years, dur- ing which time seed has been sent to each of 2,329 Ontario farmers for co-operative tests on their own farms. A definite co-operative ex- periment has been conducted with the Ontario Variegated and 'the Grimn varieties on each of 1,790 farms within the past fifteen years. Each experimenter was askéd to so locate the plots that they might remain undisturbed for several years. Quite a number of these experimental plots' which were sown as far back as 1911, still re- main unbroken, and the results are both interesting and valuable. On T925, a blank form was sent to each one of the 1,700 experimenters, asking for in- formation regarding' their exepri- ment. After receiving upwards of three hundred replies, we are able to summarise the results. In answer to the inquiry as to which ter results in the local test, it is interesting to note that of the fourteen years, from 1911 to 1924, inclusive, the majority of the ex- perimenters favored the Ontario Variegated in the years 1912, 1913 1910, 1918, 1920, 1923 and 1924, and the majority favored the years. this question, 95 preferred the Grmn and '93 the Ontario Varie-' gated. In response to the ques-* tion as to the most extensively grown varieties of Alfalfa in the various districts, 119 farmers mentioned Ontario Variegated, 65 Grimn, 4 Common and 1 Turkes- tan, white 3 others simply men- tioned Northern Grown. A good many varietiés and of the two varieties gave the bet-* "own farms. In , compliance with the wishes of the Pope ; \ the queen will wear long dresses with i high cut bodice and collar. The sleeves and gowns with short sleeves or no sleeves at all are to be frowned upon. strains of Alfalfa secured from various sources have been tested at different times at the Ontario Agricultural College. In 1909 one test of sixty-eight plots and an- other of seventy-one, were started at the College. These were con- tinued for ten years. Other ex- periments have been conducted for shorter and longer lengths of time. The Ontario Variegatec and the Grimm varieties have given the best returns when hardi- ness of plants, yield of greer fodder, hay and seed are taken in- to consideration. Ontario is in deed fortunate at the present time in having an abundant supply o seed of high quality of the Ontaric Variegated Alfalfa, which can b. obtained at a very moderate price The farmers of this Province hav: an opportunity as never before, o securing seed for sowing on thei. The demand for this hardy seed is increasing in th United States. It would be wel for the farmers in this Province tc retain and sow as much as pos 'sible of the gu,000 bushels of seed which was produced in Ontario in 1925. Our Alfalfa production has been trebbled in the last ten years and doubled in the last three {years. It is estimated that there were over half million acres of Alfalfa grown in Ontario in the fast season. It is believed that the Alfalfa area will soon reach one million acres.
