@' q hone : . EL " p a VOL. IX DRYDEN, Q COMMENCEMENT SERMON . AT UNITED CHURCH DRYDEN United Church was filled last Sunday evening on the occasion df a "Commencement Sermon" preached to the Trus- tees; Teachers and High School pupils of Dryden The Rev J W. Howes, gave a splendid illuminating discourse on the "Two Pillars of Society." The minister, after welcoming on behalf of the Uniteq Church the school authorities and pupiis spoke of the two pillars as Edu- cation and Religon. Describing society as a mutual contract system of individuals, whose ideal should be establsh- ed through modern instrument- talities,; mechanical anq social, of nation-wide intercommunicat'on among fellow citizens, the speak- er remaarked that religion is es- sential to all education and edu- cation without religion is a con- tradiction in terms. Education was nartured in monastry and church with Monks as the worlds first schoolmasters, therefore edu- cation is the child of religion. Education was described not as a mass of knowledge, but an un- foldment of personality -- and religion was defined as fellow- ship with the Unseen---harmony between man's soul and the great Oversoul of the universe. The preacher pleaded for a synthesis of these two factors in a greater degree. Education and religion are natural allies for! both seek to emancipate the in-! dividual, not from contact with] his environment, but from Savery to it, to enlarge his horizons and it quicken his aspirations. The speaker went on to warn against the dangers of depart- mentalizing life, when the Al- mighty intended it should be lived whole with all knowledge helping to that end "Life Must] be seen steadily and lived whole" The chief end of education is not to get a living, but to produce a life. Education has a spiritual basis as deep as religion. A second danger was the divor; cing of education from conducts and morality from religion--th's resulted in the world confla gra- tion of 1914-18 and our present evils in civilization. Merely to make a living is a: very low ambition to which to: put our education. We are here for something much higher than that. We are here to make a 'fe that is immortal, to gain! treasurers to carry with us into, a life eternal The final appeal was for every! one present to combine the Relig- ion of Jesus Christ with the cult- ure of the Ages, then would arise that golden age, Plato, Isaiah, John the Divine, Sir Thos Moore and thousands of others have dreamt of, and which Jesuh gave His Life on Calvary To create. The message was well rec ceived, . SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETG A Special Meeting of the Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday even- ing, with Mayor Wood presiding. Judges Award the Winners of the Best Garden Contest In order to encourage the beauti- fying of Drydén, the Dryden Paper Company last year gave a special prize, and continued the gift this year. Out of the numerous gardens |: in the town, there were eleven entrants. These gardens were visited three times, by the Judges dur- ing the summer. The merits of the proper were taken in three ways, and points figured on Fruits & Flow- ers, Vegetables and general neat- ness. Naturally the points varied at places were kept to high stand- up until the last moment. The absence of any weeds, in some cases was very noticeable. The winner of the first prize is . Wiles; the second winner is ? Curl ley, and the Judges found such difficulty in decision be- tee n A. Tew and G. Harris + hey asked the Agricultural Society to supplement the prize, in drder to admit of two third prizes, so that Mr Tew and Mr Harris both take third. The Juds ges are of the opinion that people who like nice things, should take time to see the gar- den of Messrs Tew, Harris, Wiles each visit. It is gratifying tofand Curley. ABOUT FARMERS MUNICIPALITY OF VAN seth HORNE Editor Dryden Observer: Paw Collector Wanted Dear Editor: Our Local Fair ent will soon be here again, and I wonder how many people will really think of what is on show Of course we all go to see what there is, but how many really think what it actually means. In a district like ours eysrything shown is produced only by work and labor which only those who have done it can realize what it means. Every bit of land has been won to produce the victuals which help to keep us whole to conquer more, and yet let any one who motors along any of our roads look, and they will see many, far too many Farm Homes standing empty. I some times wonder if there is really no way of bettering the lot of country people. What is the cause of 50 many leaving the farm In these days of quick travel, why are there not more of the towns- people living in the country. To my mind it is the ideal home. I cannot understand why well-to-do people live in town when 15 to 20 minutes in a car can have them in their places of business and then in the even- ing home again where there is privacy. town suni- some Have the better to do in never thought of having a mer farm home? We need thing like that and this could stand quite a lot of it to the general benefit of the whole. Just before closing, I like to add that there is one prize I would like to see added on the list and that is the "Best of the Lot," say in every class. Especially would I like to see this in Stock and Poultry classes The best show on show is quite} an honour and worth trying for.
