i 3 1 git, 1051. THE DRYDEN OBSERVE Page Three EVENTH | DECENNIAL CENSUS A statement by the minister of trade and commerce to the _ people of Canada at the opening of the Seventh Decennial Census. 1. Do not hesitate to answer | the inquiries. The purpose of ¥ he Census is to collect data ncerning the social and indust- trial conditions in the country as a whole and for the different provinces, cities and countries. Answers to the questions will be used for this purpose only. Enu- merators and employees of the (Census Bureau are liable to sev- ere punishment if they divalge any of the information collecte 1 about any individual person. "9. Meet the census-taker court- eously. You will save time for yourself and render the Goveri- . ment a great assistance by co- operating with the enumerator 'when he arrives at your home. 3. If you do not have exact @piormation about such questions N- Ao the value of your home or the amount of your earnings, give the best estimate you can. 4. The "woman in the home' should be prepared for the cen- sus questions in advance, for she is the member of the family who will be in many cases called upon to answer the inquiries. 5. Persons living alone should fill out promptly any individual blanks left by the enumerator who may have called in their absence, and families away from home on visits should be careful to see that they are counted in the district where they maintain their "usual place of abode." 6. Do not hesitate to ask the census-taker to show his ereden- tials if you suspect that he is not a bona fide enumerator. : Radio Census One of the questions to be asked in the coming census is ¥/ "Do you own a radio?' Tt may od be suspected that the purpose "ik + of this is to locate persons who may not have paid their license, or to assist private radio com- panies to make sales by letting them know what families do not own radios. This is wholly un- founded. The answers to this question. as to all other census questions, are absolutely confi- dential, even to Government De- partments. The purpose of the question is to explore and ana- of Canada is--where it is locat- ed. where it is densest, and how it is made up according to the different elements in the popu- lation. With the growing im- portance of radio, such informa- tion is indispensable to the formulation of satisfactory broadcasting. Radio 'is a further index of the Canadian standard of living, and some interesting studies may be expected as a lyse just what the radio audience |° O GRANITE & MARBLE O 0 MONUMENTS 0 O GEO.
