To the Dryden Observer: Sir: In your issue of August 28th 1931, I read an article: "Canadian Legion Convention Opened" Question--What does Mayor Marks mean by the "Menace of Communism?' I know by per- sonal experience of 6 months leave from my location in Ont- ario that the Communists have certainly done a lot to aleviate suffering and want in the West- ern provinces through the priv- elege of free speech on the pub- lic place alloteed for that pur- pose. For they declare with no uncertain sound, the true condi- tion of certain systems as they exist. I am not saying that they have solved the problem of elim- inating unemployment or doing away with the present system of Government, which we 'so far have a solemn right to maintain. but I dare to ask the honored gentleman this question, "How far can we go on any line of demand without a certain amount of agitation and get any- where?" I. quofe our district member, Earl Hutchison's words here in a letter to me some time ago, "We cannot expect those with plenty to help those who are in need."" Meaning they will not, unless pressure is brought to bear. Had it not been for the Com- munist party, there would have been practically no relief given to a large number of people who are really worthy. This is not newspaper talk but hard facts from which the present day press is becoming void as they that a system which gradually throws men out of unemploy- ment and cuts down wages and holds the old military style, of which we were nationally so bitter against Germany, is creat- ing the very thing which will eventually lead to its overthrow. Suppose for instance you or I had 1,000 men working under our dictation. We have cvery- thing we need, have no use of them any longer, so we lay them off and shut off their chance of making a living for their fam- ilies. The result is enemies. In case of war we may buy some back, but can we trust those whom we have denied a living wage? Arve money politicians, {without brains, all that are re- quired to keep an up-to-date in- telligent people like Canadians from rising mp against such? I will close 'with saying that it is absurd and untrue to say that this party which is called communism is principally people not born in Canada. Their best speakers are Canadian born.
