Fhe mvt THE DRYDE OBSERVER = February bth, 1953 THE FIRST NEW WORLD "SLUMP" Historical echoes of a pression?' which '"hit" the little oval island of Antigua, as early as the 17th century, are heard in the British colony's recital of plans to celebrate in the autumn of 1932 the three hundredth: anniversary of Columbus's dis. covery of the island. The Antiguan slump of about 1640 was due to apprehension' lest there be an over production of 'tobacco, the growth of which had just become a flourishing industry. Tobacco growing died ignominiously as a result. Sidelights of Antiqua'g history wringing the reader up to the present day of fine Canadian! National liners and freighters! which vigit the island, are full of interest. For instance, Columbus, | far from being a lone explorer, | had with him 1,500 souls when he made his second © 'eruige" to the West Indies and discovered | Antigua. Lack of water there thwarted a later attempt on the 7 part of one d'Esnambuc, French privateer captain, to settle the island. = Englishmen later took root there under Captain Edward Warner, in 1632. Savages ab-i ducted the wife and children of an early Antiguan Government. Antigua's area is only 108 sgnare miles and her population only 30,000. The island is of voleanie, sedimentary and coral origin, which is an unusual com- bination. New and striking postage stamps wil mark the Tercenten- ary and give interest to phila- telists everywhere. One stamp will show Admiral Nelson's old dockyard; another will depict the very old Antigua Govern- ment House; another Nelson's ship at anchor; another designed by a woman shows the ship of Sir Thomas Warner and another the Arches of Time.
